Today I have submitted a formal appeal to LINK regarding their Banking Hub assessment for Coalville, supported by both the local council ward members, where the closing Lloyds branch is based.
The appeal sets out the areas where I believe Coalville meets the criteria for a Banking Hub and challenges some of the assessment data used. Especially around the number of small businesses, and also highlights the number of vulnerable people within the local vicinity who rely on in-person banking services.
Below is the covering letter of the full appeal, which has been submitted to LINK.
Access to in-person banking remains vital for residents who can’t easily travel, aren’t confident online, and for small businesses that rely on cash services. The closure of Lloyds in Coalville will force people to travel further for face-to-face support and risks leaving our community behind. I will continue pushing LINK to reverse the original decision and allow a Banking Hub to be established in Coalville. ... See MoreSee Less

I’m pleased to see that, following the Labour Rural Research Group’s letter to the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Energy Security & Net Zero about rising heating oil prices, the Government has now written to the home heating oil and LPG industry, warning them not to exploit the current volatility.
I know how these price spikes are hitting people locally. Many of you have already shared your experiences with me, and I’ll be raising these cases directly with the Financial Secretary to the Treasury tomorrow during a meeting on this issue.
This follows the question I raised in the House on Thursday last week. You can watch it here: 👉 fb.watch/FLEc3KxPtJ/
I've also raised this directly with the Minister for Energy during conversations yesterday and the Department for Business and Trade this morning too. ... See MoreSee Less

I was proud to co-sign a 10-minute Rule Bill, which has now been adopted by the Government, which will see strong new protections for children with allergies in school.
We’re making it a legal requirement for all schools to have:
✅Spare adrenaline auto-injectors and devices
✅Allergy training for all staff
✅Allergy safety policies
✅Individual Healthcare Plans
Nearly 700,000 children in England have a food allergy. As well as saving lives, the new measures will help children stay in school, with 500,000 days of learning lost due to allergy-related illness or medical appointments in the last year alone.
The new guidance is now open for consultation, ahead of coming into force in September 2026. ... See MoreSee Less

Last week, I co‑signed a letter along with 87 cross bench MPs and Peers to the CEO of Travelodge following the deeply disturbing case of a woman who was sexually assaulted in her hotel room after a man was reportedly given both her room number and a key card by reception staff.
The perpetrator has since been convicted and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. However, serious questions remain about how such a breach was allowed to occur and whether current hotel security procedures are robust enough to protect guests, particularly women travelling alone.
I am encouraged that we have already received a response from Travelodge, who have agreed to meet with MPs to discuss the incident further and to consider what changes must be made to ensure that something like this can never happen again.

Heating oil prices have skyrocketed over the last week and following on from my question to the Secretary of State on this the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG) agreed a letter to be sent from our chair to Ed Miliband and Rachel Reeves 👇
Households, businesses & charities across North West Leicestershire have already highlighted some of the immediate pressures they’re facing following the increasing prices.
As a member of the LRRG I will continue to engage with Ministers, and we’ve been working hard to push for urgent action.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, it was a privilege to bring together a room full of incredible women on Friday.
These are women who both inspire and challenge me every day, who do so much for our area and really are the glue that binds our community together. From educators to local business owners to local community leaders and local representatives. Women who are standing up in our community and getting involved.
We spoke about how language can contribute to little micro aggressions women face daily. How girls at school are “bossy” but boys are “assertive”.
We empowered each other, we listened, we gave advice and we shared our stories.
Although there have been over 17000 MPs elected to Parliament, I’m only the 624th woman - part of what drives me is to inspire the next generation of women in politics.
We must continue to lift each other up, to walk with confidence, and to keep showing up for ourselves ✊
With World Book Day earlier in the week as well, it’s a great opportunity to think about women authors, and to motivate young women interested in writing and reading.
Given that, it of course made sense to host the event at the Book Nook, and actually we could have filled the Book Nook many times over - there are that many inspiring women in our community.
Thank you for hosting us, and for also sharing your story 🍰

If you've not had chance to sign my petition to help bring a Banking Hub to Coalville you can sign it online here: tinyurl.com/4zmnspxe or drop me an email, message or ring the office for a paper copy for you, or someone you know!
I am in the process of formalising an appeal to LINK regarding the assessment that has taken place for a Banking Hub in Coalville and will be submitting this shortly. I would urge local residents and other stakeholders, especially current customers of Lloyds, to sign my petition to help show the strength of feeling on this issue.

As a follow on from the Ivanhoe Line debate I hosted in Westminster Hall a couple of weeks ago, I also met with the Rail Minister Lord Hendy in the last week to keep championing our case for the line.
It's clear reinstating the Ivanhoe Line would impact daily lives:
➡️ 90% rely on cars because public transport just isn’t good enough
➡️ 72% said poor public transport prevents them getting where they need to go
➡️ 97% support restoring the Ivanhoe Line
There is no doubt in my mind, nor in the minds of local people, that restoring passenger rail is a priority.
As the Minister responding to the debate acknowledged, I will continue to push, advocate, and hold the department’s feet to the fire to see the Ivanhoe Line reinstated, for both the people of North West Leicestershire and the communities that call The National Forest home.

Great to be back in the constituency today.
Lovely to hold a constituency surgery in Castle Donington this morning, chatting about local litter, disabled parking and many other topics that are important to you, followed by meeting a local business in Ashby.
Spent some time looking through the Banking Hub appeal to LINK, which is now being finalised ahead of its submission shortly, correspondence from you, and now onto another engagement with some fabulous women from across North West Leicestershire ahead of International Women's Day this weekend! ...
