During a statement in Parliament on the National Cancer Plan this afternoon, I asked the Minister to expand a bit more on the neighbourhood element of the treatment plan, and how it can benefit semi-rural communities like ours.
The Minister, in her response, outlined how the Government will introduce new training places targeted at trusts with the biggest workforce gaps - prioritising rural and coastal areas where patients currently struggle most.

In my previous role as a County Councillor I sat on the Health Scrutiny Committee, part of the role was reviewing all of the health metrics including the cancer targets twice a year. Through this committee I put constant pressure on local NHS services and it was clear that our local cancer treatment metrics had been gradually been in decline.
In addition, I’ve had a focus on NHS screening for key cancers, which I did as a councillor and now continue to do as an MP.
This Labour Government is committed to seeing huge improvements in screening, the two week wait for key cancers, and 62 days for treatment. As well as screening
It was useful to meet with The Secretary of State, Wes Streeting, as part of the Rural group of Labour MPs earlier to hear how the cancer plan will be delivered across the whole country, factoring in the unique situations we have in rural communities, and cross-boundary ICB areas like North West Leicestershire.
I’m incredibly proud that our National Cancer Plan:
💰Invests £2.3 billion in 9.5 million more tests & scans
🧑⚕️Sends cancer specialists to rural & coastal areas
🤖Delivers 500,000 robotic surgeries
👫Helps 3 in 4 patients survive 5 years after diagnosis ... See MoreSee Less

I’ve heard from hundreds of constituents in North West Leicestershire who want fireworks to be more carefully regulated - not banned, but made safer and less disruptive.
For many people, pets, livestock, and wildlife, loud fireworks cause real distress. They can also be deeply triggering for veterans and vulnerable people living with PTSD.
That’s why I supported the Fireworks Private members Bill put forward by my colleague Sarah Owen MP which proposed a review on the maximum noise level from 120dB to 90dB. It’s a sensible step that would make a real difference - while still allowing people to enjoy displays.
This was debated in parliament in a petitions debate last month.
Fireworks can be fun without being frightening. 🎆

It was a real pleasure to speak at GoHenry’s Reception in Parliament, as the Co-Chair of the Financial Education APPG.
GoHenry teaches kids about money management and responsible spending, offering money management lessons that allow children to handle their own pocket money while learning valuable financial skills.
It was fantastic to hear that they have now released 80 of their video lessons on YouTube, free for anyone to watch and use: www.youtube.com/JustGoHenry/videos
This is such a timely moment for financial education, I look forward to working closely with the sector over the coming months ... See MoreSee Less

Whilst I’ve been in Parliament this week, the team have been busy out and about right across North West Leicestershire.
On my behalf earlier in the week, they attended a meeting to discuss flooding in the village of Diseworth with local stakeholders and the flood alleviation group.
Alongside this, they met with Ashby Town Council and Cash Access UK to discuss progress on the new Banking Hub coming to the town later this year.
Separately, letters were delivered to local residents about my upcoming residents meeting on how we can enhance protections for homeowners on freehold estates and prevent estates from being left unadopted, with more of these to be delivered over the coming week.
Altogether, it’s been another busy week of working hard locally and in Parliament to raise concerns, push for progress, and deliver for residents across North West Leicestershire. ... See MoreSee Less

Great to host a coffee morning earlier today at Ashby de la Zouch town council.
We had a great conversation and covered a number of things from the NHS, Police, local government reorganisation, transport, Ivanhoe, Speeding and the unfair cost of a holiday during the summer.
My next coffee morning will focus on Leaseholders. Letters will be delivered over the next week or so.
If you would like to attend please just contact the office.

There is much more to our days in Westminster other than what goes on in the House of Commons. When I’m not in the chamber I’m often engaging with colleagues including members of the House of Lords, working with businesses, responding to matters in Westminster Hall or attending meetings or briefings in relation to legislation.
So I thought I’d take you though a typical day from Tuesday this week (we had legislation on Tuesday so this was more a typical day).
Great to start the day alongside Framework Housing and the release of their important research report undertaken by Imogen Blood on the work of supported housing. As someone who has significant experience in supported housing, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of supported housing on people.

Then spent some time with Bloc at a round table of small businesses. Bloc has recently released a report on Small Businesses. We discussed everything from access to finance, investments, tax, AI and tech, late payments, planning and licensing. It was great to spend time with some inspiring entrepreneurs.

Then onto a debate in Westminster Hall on Safety of Women whilst our Running, Walking, Cycling and wheeling. Safety and ensuring women can feel safe is an important part of the challenge we have to half violence against women and girls.
I then made my way over to the book of condolence for Holocaust Memorial Day, to sign on behalf of my constituents.
Then onto a Delegated Legislation Committee. This is where a piece of primary legislation is in place and we need to update secondary legislation.
In the House of Commons there had been a statement on the changes to Business Rates for Pubs as well as the update to Leasehold Reform so I was keeping an eye on what had been discussed.
We also voted on new legislation around Medical Training.
Finally, it was great to sponsor the annual dinner of the Food and Drink Wholesale Association, alongside so many wholesalers and industry experts. It was good to hear about the Food Resilience Commission that will be chaired by my colleague Daniel Zeichner on how we can work with industry and government on Food Security. I’ll be sharing with Ministers the conversation and important insights from the sector. ... See MoreSee Less

🚆 Ivanhoe Line Debate
I was proud to lead the first ever dedicated debate on restoring The Ivanhoe Line.
I want to thank all my constituents who shared their stories, either recently, or as part of my previous transport survey about how reinstating the Ivanhoe Line would impact daily lives :
➡️ 90% rely on cars because public transport just isn’t good enough
➡️ 72% said poor public transport prevents them getting where they need to go
➡️ 97% support restoring the Ivanhoe Line
There is no doubt in my mind, nor in the minds of local people, that restoring passenger rail is a priority.
As the Minister acknowledged, I will continue to push, advocate, and hold the department’s feet to the fire to see the Ivanhoe Line reinstated, for both the people of North West Leicestershire and the communities that call The National Forest home.
A link to the full debate can be found in the comments!
