A look forward to 2026
Over the past year, alongside colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG), I’ve continued to work closely with local farmers. I’ve met with more than 50 farmers across North West Leicestershire and have consistently pressed the Government to rethink its Inheritance and Property relief proposals.

What a lovely day for a meeting with the Ashby Canal Trust at Moira Furnace.
Great to hear an update on the work of the Trust. The dedication to the Canal from the Trust is inspiring.
The Furnace and park are also looking fabulous after the works completed by This Is NWLeics. Congratulations to all
involved. Shame the sun was hiding when I took the picture!
As always great coffee at the Furnace Cafe.
Good to pop into Sable Studio Gallery and Furnace Lane Pottery whilst I was there. Definitely worth a visit. ... See MoreSee Less

I recently highlighted a frustrating reality for many people locally, that it can take longer to reach a train station via public transport than the train journey itself to London.
That’s the situation for too many residents. Long, indirect routes to the nearest station make what should be a straightforward trip unnecessarily complicated and time-consuming.
Public transport should make life easier, but right now, it's just too complex locally.
The Ivanhoe Line would provide a straightforward way to connect with onward public transport, making it far easier to reach other destinations and ensuring that getting to a station doesn’t take longer than the journey itself! ... See MoreSee Less

26% increase in the amount of defibrillators available to the public in North West Leicestershire.
Every defibrillator installed in our communities has the potential to save a life. I’m incredibly proud that North West Leicestershire has seen a strong increase in defibrillator access over the past year.
Some of this increase is due to the amazing efforts of local fund raising, but significantly many of these lifesavers were installed but not connected to the network.
Now when you call 999 the call handler will have more community Defibs to direct you to.
The Defib Dash campaign (team photo below from the campaign 👇) showed what can be achieved when residents, volunteers, local organisations and emergency services work together.
Following my recent meeting with the British Heart Foundation to review the campaign and its results, it’s clear we’ve made real progress, but we’re not stopping here.
I will continue working with partners to identify and address remaining gaps, ensure devices are registered and accessible, and make sure as many people as possible know where their nearest defibrillator is, and how to use it. ... See MoreSee Less

I was pleased to stop by Premtech this morning, one of the UK’s leading engineering design consultancies, a key part of the National Gas organisation, and based in Ashby! ⚡️
During the visit, I saw first‑hand the expertise and skills of the Premtech team and the part they play in our energy security and our transition to clean energy.
Premtech plays a vital role in planning and designing the pipelines that keep energy flowing safely and reliably across the country. From supporting our National Transmission System to helping repurpose infrastructure for hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, its work is central to the UK’s energy system both today and in the future.
Thank you for inviting me to visit and for the opportunity to meet the Premtech team! ... See MoreSee Less

Following my Defib Dash campaign last year, I'm proud to say that, according to the latest data from the British Heart Foundation, the number of Defibs registered on The Circuit, the national register of Defibs, has increased by 26% Which is fantastic.
Here is just one of those at Snibston Colliery Park in Coalville. Whilst this one is being managed by the County Council, so many Defibs are purchased using charitable funds and and being looked after by local volunteers.
If a Defib is not on The Circuit then in an emergency situation, when you call 999, the call handler won't know its location to direct you to it, potentially wasting valuable seconds which can be the difference between life and death!
I’m working with the British Heart Foundation to explore ways to further increase the number of life-saving defibrillators this year. I’ve also written to all major supermarkets, encouraging them to relocate internal defibrillators to external locations, so they are accessible 24/7 and can improve local coverage beyond store opening hours. ... 🚨 Another huge step forward today.
This Labour Government has scrapped the two-child cap, a policy that pushed far too many families into hardship.
Across the East Midlands, over 100,000 children will be lifted out of poverty as a result of this change, and across the country that rises to 450,000.
And it’s part of wider support for families 👇
🍽️ Free breakfast clubs
📚 Expanded Free School Meals
👕 Caps on costly school uniforms
👶 More support with childcare
Put together, these measures are set to deliver one of the biggest reductions in child poverty on record. ... See MoreSee Less
