A look forward to 2026
Over the past year, alongside colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG), I’ve continued to work closely with local farmers. I’ve met with more than 50 farmers across North West Leicestershire and have consistently pressed the Government to rethink its Inheritance and Property relief proposals.

Flooding continues to have a serious impact on communities across Leicestershire, particularly in our rural villages, where many residents feel overlooked after years of underfunding and limited support.
During a debate on rural flooding last week, I highlighted the growing challenge posed by the sheer volume of water that we have been seeing and the impact it is having on local communities.
I also welcomed the recent government funding for the Diseworth Flood Alleviation Scheme, while pressing the Minister on what more can be done to ensure rural communities are not left behind when it comes to flood protection and recovery. ... See MoreSee Less

It’s been another busy week of meetings and debates in Westminster followed by another packed couple of days locally.
I’ve held a roundtable in Coalville on the SEND White Paper ahead of another in Ashby next month (link to sign up un the comments).
Followed by a great conversation with a local accountant Victoria who’s keen to support more local entrepreneurs and shared some of her work and new book with me, a big thanks for popping in!
I then had a productive meeting on teams with the Head of Driver Services at the DVSA discussing how we can further tackle the backlog of driving tests and create some more capacity locally at test centres like Loughborough in the short term!
All rounded off this morning with a door knock in Ashby listening to local people about the issues that matter the most to you. ... See MoreSee Less

Great to meet with the Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council again to discuss a number of topics impacting North West Leicestershire.
Not least the upcoming distribution of the £53 million support for those who warm their homes with heating oil via the Crisis and Resilience Fund.
The team at LCC are working hard to establish how best to target this support in the local area, and as soon as I have more details to share I will of course do so, alongside LCC.
We also spent time discussing ongoing flooding concerns across North West Leicestershire, public transport and SEND support, just to name a couple of areas. ... See MoreSee Less

Earlier this week, I was pleased to welcome the £53 million support package aimed at helping those most in need who rely on heating oil to keep their homes warm.
This funding will be distributed through the Crisis and Resilience Fund, which opens on 1st April, and will be managed locally by Leicestershire County Council. It’s a vital step in ensuring support reaches the people who need it most, as quickly and effectively as possible.
I’ll be meeting again with the Chief Executive at LCC this week to discuss how this funding will be rolled out, and to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support residents across our communities. ... See MoreSee Less

Great to see solar panels being installed at Coalville Hospital, another positive step forward thanks to GB Energy.
Investing in clean energy across our NHS isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for patients too. The average NHS site could save up to £45,000 per year on their annual energy bill when solar panels are paired with complementary technologies like battery storage.
That’s money that can be reinvested back into frontline care where it’s needed most.
Fantastic to see Coalville Hospital leading the way 🌞

I recently spoke during a petition debate about the urgent need to improve awareness and early detection of Type 1 diabetes in children. Thank you to John Story, the father of Lyla, who tragically died when the warning signs of type 1 diabetes were missed, for starting the petition.
Too many families are finding themselves having to push for answers when something doesn’t feel right. When symptoms are missed, the consequences can be devastating, and no parent should ever have to face that fear.
Early diagnosis saves lives. Greater awareness, better training, and improved screening could make all the difference for children and their families.
Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and supported this campaign. ... See MoreSee Less
