How does policy change translate into meaningful financial education for young people? 👇

It was great to bring together policymakers, charities, financial services, and education specialists to explore this question together as Co-Chair of the Financial Education APPG.

I was pleased to hear from the Department for Education that it is a priority to ensure teachers on the ground are supported and consulted at every step of the way.

It is by working together as a sector that we have achieved such strides forward in financial education being strengthened in the national curriculum.

The work starts now to ensure that not only is this a success, but that financial education can benefit all young people, regardless of their starting point.

There was a lot of focus in the room regarding young people disconnected from mainstream education, young people in early careers, the gender divide, and underserved communities. This will absolutely be something the APPG looks at moving forward.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, and I greatly look forward to continuing these important conversations.

Yesterday, alongside parliamentary colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG), I met with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to discuss the sharp rise in heating oil prices and our concerns about potential profiteering.

We have heard directly from many of you about being ripped off by companies, through unfair pricing, cancelled orders, and what appear to be clear breaches of consumer law.

I asked the CMA to clarify what further action they can take to tackle unfair practices by heating oil providers, and how lessons from the invasion of Ukraine and the current international situation can help them better prepare for future price spikes.

I am also pleased that the Chancellor confirmed earlier today that a new anti-profiteering framework will be introduced. This will give government bodies and regulators, including the CMA, stronger powers to identify and act against unfair pricing where it occurs.

I will continue to follow up with the CMA on this issue, as well as on forecourt fuel prices, to keep pushing for action on something I know is affecting so many of you.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor have made it clear that all options remain on the table to support people with the cost of living. I welcome that this was also discussed at last night’s COBRA meeting.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office if there is any support we can provide, or if you believe you are experiencing unfair practices from your heating oil provider:

Flooding continues to have a serious impact on communities across Leicestershire, particularly in our rural villages, where many residents feel overlooked after years of underfunding and limited support.

During a debate on rural flooding last week, I highlighted the growing challenge posed by the sheer volume of water that we have been seeing and the impact it is having on local communities.

I also welcomed the recent government funding for the Diseworth Flood Alleviation Scheme, while pressing the Minister on what more can be done to ensure rural communities are not left behind when it comes to flood protection and recovery.

It’s been another busy week of meetings and debates in Westminster followed by another packed couple of days locally.

I’ve held a roundtable in Coalville on the SEND White Paper ahead of another in Ashby next month (link to sign up un the comments).

Followed by a great conversation with a local accountant Victoria who’s keen to support more local entrepreneurs and shared some of her work and new book with me, a big thanks for popping in!

I then had a productive meeting on teams with the Head of Driver Services at the DVSA discussing how we can further tackle the backlog of driving tests and create some more capacity locally at test centres like Loughborough in the short term!

All rounded off this morning with a door knock in Ashby listening to local people about the issues that matter the most to you.

Great to meet with the Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council again to discuss a number of topics impacting North West Leicestershire.

Not least the upcoming distribution of the £53 million support for those who warm their homes with heating oil via the Crisis and Resilience Fund.

The team at LCC are working hard to establish how best to target this support in the local area, and as soon as I have more details to share I will of course do so, alongside LCC.

We also spent time discussing ongoing flooding concerns across North West Leicestershire, public transport and SEND support, just to name a couple of areas.
