Many people often wonder how MPs can help. There are so many different ways, and today I want to highlight one issue that comes up… driving licence delays.
I’ve been contacted by a number of constituents who have experienced difficulties renewing their licences in a timely manner, especially where medical assessments are involved. As your MP, part of my role is to work with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency to chase outstanding applications, while also raising ongoing concerns with colleagues in Government so wider improvements can be made.
Just this week, a debate in the House acknowledged that service levels in Drivers Medical Services have fallen well below expectations in recent years. (Unfortunately, due to diary clashes, I couldn't speak in the debate)
The Department has now moved to a more modern system for managing applications, and the DVLA has recruited additional staff to help reduce the backlog. As a result, so far in April, the average time to make a licensing decision in medical cases is 56.6 working days, which is a significant reduction from 71.4 days in February.
Licences will be prioritised where necessary, and in many cases, drivers may be able to continue driving under Section 88. However, delays are still unacceptable, which is why the DVLA is also working with the Department for Transport to explore further improvements.
In our office, we’ve had some very positive cases where we’ve been able to expedite long-running applications. If you’re impacted by delays, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and I’ll always do my best to help.
This is just one example of the hundreds of pieces of casework I deal with each week. ... See MoreSee Less

It was great to bring people together again on Saturday to talk about the SEND system and the current government consultation. A special thanks to Robert Martin, CEO of Menphys, for joining the discussion.
Hearing directly from parents, teachers, and experts in the same room to share perspectives and experiences will help shape my response to the consultation. The conversations were honest, especially around the long waits families face for EHCPs and the impact that has on children.
What stayed with me most was the shared determination to improve things. Every child deserves the right support and the best possible start in life, and it’s clear there’s a real appetite to keep pushing for change.
Thank you to everyone who came along and spoke so openly, not just on Saturday but also at my previous event in Coalville a couple of weeks ago. ... See MoreSee Less

It was great to meet with Coats4Kids earlier this week🧥
They work with primary schools up and down the country to remove one specific barrier to children’s readiness to learn - delivering adequate winter coats to kids that need them.
Every child deserves to arrive at school warm, confident and ready to learn.
Coats4Kids provides brand-new winter coats to children in need discreetly, stigma-free and at no cost to families.
Listening to the passion that Peter and Angela have for this amazing charity was inspiring.
They offer so much support for families in our community, and you can find out more about the work they do here: www.coats4kids.org.uk/
I will be continuing to support them wherever possible, and thank them for all the incredibly hard work they’ve done so far.
They did say a huge thank you to all of the rotary clubs that have helped fundraise.

This government is determined to fight your corner when it comes to consumer protections. That’s why we’re transforming the energy market to ensure it works for you.
Energy consumers have had to put up with suppliers collapsing, the scandal of the forcefitting of pre-payment meters, delays to compensation claims, and poor customer service ranging from inaccurate billing to faulty smart meters. We are tackling this situation with sweeping changes to the regulator Ofgem, which include:
✅ Banning bosses’ bonuses in cases of wrongdoing
✅ Stronger powers for Ofgem to enforce consumer law directly
✅ Speeding up redress for customers
✅ Strengthening powers in unregulated sectors like heating oil
After more than a decade of allowing poor behaviour from energy companies to go unchallenged, this Labour government is committed to standing up for families and businesses and fighting their corner.
That’s alongside other measures announced this week to move faster towards cheap, clean power that we have control over to break the link between international gas price spikes and your bills.
That includes:
⚡️ New fixed contracts for low-carbon electricity generators to move them away from volatile global markets.
🏡 More social housing upgrades for better energy-efficient homes
☀️ New renewables on publicly owned land, brownfield and industrial sites
🚘 Making it easier to own EVs, install heat pumps and solar
📚 100 more schools to see GB Energy solar panels this summer
☢️ Expanding British Nuclear Power through small modular reactors
There is only one route to energy security and national security, and that is going further and faster on clean, homegrown power that we control. ... See MoreSee Less
