King’s Speech – a clear destination for a successful Britain

North West Leicestershire’s new MP, Amanda Hack, has welcomed today’s King’s Speech, describing it as a new start for Britain and a clear plan for a government focused on delivering the change our country desperately needs.

Ms Hack listened to King Charles’ speech from among the assembled ranks of over 400 Labour MPs who provide the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, with a governing majority of 180 and a huge mandate to deliver the pledges set out in the party’s election-winning manifesto.

Speaking shortly after the King had left the Palace of Westminster, Ms Hack said:

“This is only my second week in parliament, but barely a day has passed without my discovering more of the mess that we’ve been left to clear up. Our public services are in crisis; our rivers are full of sewage, and the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has opened the books to find that the nation’s finances are in their worst state since WWII.

The King’s speech showed that we plan to govern with serious solutions. I am proud to be part of a Parliamentary Labour Party that is fully behind a government that is already making the difficult decisions needed to fix the instability we’ve inherited.

The speech referred to a total of 40 government bills. Every one of these will impact people’s lives locally through higher growth, lower bills, safer streets, secure borders, more opportunities for our children and urgent measures to get the NHS back on its feet.

I am particularly pleased to see bills tackling issues that came up again and again during my election campaign, including legislation to:

  • Bring our rail services back into public ownership, improve passenger journeys and deliver better value for taxpayers.
  • Give the police the powers they need to crack down on crime and anti-social behaviour, including the explosion in retail crime.
  • Introduce personal criminal liability and measures to withhold bonuses for water bosses who pollute and break the law.

Labour’s offer to people in North West Leicestershire can be summarised in a single word, ‘Change.’ That change will not happen overnight, but as people can see, the work of change started in earnest today.

It’s an honour and a privilege to represent a constituency in the county where I have lived and worked for the best part of three decades. The new government has set out a clear destination for a successful Britain, and I will work with everyone here North West Leicestershire, and further afield, to ensure we get there.”

Ashby Temporary Banking Hub Now Open!

It was fantastic to visit the new temporary Banking Hub in the heart of the town with Deputy Mayor, Cllr Murrae Blair-Park. It's vital that, while work on the permanent hub continues, local people continue to have access to in-person banking services. My office has worked closely with Ashby de la Zouch Town Council and Cash Access UK to make sure that happens.

The hub will be open from Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm (I've already asked about the possibility of Saturdays in the future too) with the following banks on rotation each day:

Monday: NatWest
Tuesday: HSBC (from Mid May)
Wednesday: Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland (from June)
Thursday: Santander
Friday: Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland (from June)

I’d encourage everyone to make use of this new service and see how it can benefit them, and don’t forget to take advantage of everything the library has to offer too!

It’s been great to go through this process in Ashby, and I’m continuing to push for similar services to be introduced in Coalville following the announcement of the closure of its last bank. I’ve also written to the five major banks to request additional support for residents in Castle Donington.

From Coalville to Me

From Coalville to Measham, Moira, and beyond, our industrial heritage has shaped the local landscape. For generations, our former miners powered this country, and thats why during this Parliament at last Novembers budget our government recognised their sacrifices by boosting the pensions of over 750 former miners in North West Leicestershire by 40%.

That was thanks to the Labour Government’s transfer of the £2.3bn investment reserve back to British Coal Superannuation Scheme members.

That gave former miners an average boost of £100 per week back into their pockets!

I’m proud of our local industrial heritage. It touches nearly every part of North West Leicestershire, and I’m proud that our Labour Government has delivered on our pledge to support our former mineworkers.

And I’m still working hard on the future sharing arrangements with colleagues on the Mine Workers Pension Scheme, meeting with the trustees and Ministers in Parliament.
