WASPI Update

I was surprised by the Government’s decision, announced on Tuesday, not to follow the recommendations of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s (PHSO) report into how changes to the State Pension Age were communicated. I know this news will have come as a shock and a disappointment to many WASPI women in North West Leicestershire.

The Government has accepted the PHSO’s finding of maladministration and rightly apologised for the 28-month delay in writing to 1950s-born women. I had expected the finding of maladministration to lead to some form of redress for those worst affected. I have raised my concerns with the Secretary of State, Liz Kendall, and look forward to further constructive conversations.

I will continue to advocate for a fair solution for all WASPI women in North West Leicestershire. Thank you to all those who have already been in touch, and I would encourage anybody wishing to share how changes have impacted them to contact me.

You can contact me in any of the below ways:

Update 21.03.25:

On 5 March, the Work and Pensions Select Committee, of which I am a member, wrote to the Secretary of State Liz Kendall, asking her to outline the details of compensation schemes that were considered before making the statement to the house in December. (You can read a copy of this here: https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/46944/documents/242231/default/).

We are due a response to this letter imminently and I will share this upon receipt.

In addition, I attended the e-petition debate in Westminster Hall on Monday 17th March for women affected by state pension changes. Due to other commitments in Parliament, whilst I was unable to speak during the debate I did attend to listen to the opening remarks and the Minister’s response.

I will continue to update WASPI women  with information as it becomes available.

🚌 Bus Service Updates 🚌

Following my meeting with the Director of Environment and Transport at Leicestershire County Council on Wednesday 30th July, I am disappointed that feedback from both myself and residents seemingly has not been taken on board regarding the changes to bus services being brought forward by Arriva.

I am now calling on Leicestershire County Council and Cllr Charles Whitford, the Cabinet Lead for Highways, Transport and Waste, to provide a strategy that will actually enhance provision in North West Leicestershire, not continue to cut it. For too long our communities have been disconnected bus route by bus route.

I cannot accept the services that have come forward, especially given we have provided £8 million of additional funding to enhance and safeguard provision.
