New Independent Voice for Serving Armed Forces Personnel

The Government has introduced legislation to establish an independent Armed Forces Commissioner to improve service life for our Armed Forces and their families.

The announcement follows news that the proportion of service personnel rating their morale as low, has increased for the third year in a row, up from 42% in 2021 to 58% in 2024, the lowest level on record.

The Bill delivers our manifesto commitment to create an independent Armed Forces Commissioner. This Commissioner will serve as a direct point of contact for serving personnel and their families. Their responsibilities will include the authority to initiate proactive investigations into matters that significantly affect service life. This can range from individual concerns to broader issues such as matters related to equipment, housing, and family life.

Praising the plan Amanda Hack said:

“In North West Leicestershire, we take pride in supporting those who serve our community. This is especially evident during Remembrance weekend, as the crowds wishing to pay their respects at commemoration events grow each year.

The new Armed Forces Commissioner will be a strong, independent voice for our forces community, committed to improving service life. I’m proud that this Labour Government can bring forward this important change which will make a material difference to those who choose to put their life on the line to protect our freedoms. It will once again put people at the heart of our defence plans.”

The Commissioner will have powers to access information and defence sites, including visiting sites in the UK unannounced. They will have the power to make recommendations, and to set out those recommendations in reports which will be laid before Parliament.

The National Forest should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can drive.

Right now, too many people are forced onto the roads simply to visit one of our most important natural assets. That’s not good enough.

We need better transport options, such as reinstating passenger rail services, so more people can enjoy it without relying on a car.

Moira is the official heart of the National Forest and that is based in North West Leicestershire, the partnership between North West Leicestershire District Council and the National Forest Company is one to be proud of.

I’m really pleased

I’m really pleased to share that this week I’ve been appointed as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Sir Alan Campbell, Leader of the House of Commons.

For those wondering what this means, a PPS is an MP who supports a member of the government with their work in Parliament. It offers valuable experience working closely with the government.

The Leader of the House of Commons has one of the broadest roles in Parliament, organising government business, setting the agenda and answering questions from MPs each week on any topic.

Importantly, this new role does not change my commitment to North West Leicestershire. I will continue to be just as available and dedicated to representing you as I have since July 2024.
