The Government has introduced legislation to establish an independent Armed Forces Commissioner to improve service life for our Armed Forces and their families.
The announcement follows news that the proportion of service personnel rating their morale as low, has increased for the third year in a row, up from 42% in 2021 to 58% in 2024, the lowest level on record.
The Bill delivers our manifesto commitment to create an independent Armed Forces Commissioner. This Commissioner will serve as a direct point of contact for serving personnel and their families. Their responsibilities will include the authority to initiate proactive investigations into matters that significantly affect service life. This can range from individual concerns to broader issues such as matters related to equipment, housing, and family life.
Praising the plan Amanda Hack said:
“In North West Leicestershire, we take pride in supporting those who serve our community. This is especially evident during Remembrance weekend, as the crowds wishing to pay their respects at commemoration events grow each year.
The new Armed Forces Commissioner will be a strong, independent voice for our forces community, committed to improving service life. I’m proud that this Labour Government can bring forward this important change which will make a material difference to those who choose to put their life on the line to protect our freedoms. It will once again put people at the heart of our defence plans.”
The Commissioner will have powers to access information and defence sites, including visiting sites in the UK unannounced. They will have the power to make recommendations, and to set out those recommendations in reports which will be laid before Parliament.

As Co-Chair of the Food and Drink APPG, and an MP proudly representing a rural constituency, it was a pleasure to celebrate fantastic food manufacturers across the country at our inaugural MP Choice Awards.
Events like this matter because they give us the chance to pause, reflect, and properly celebrate the people behind the products that end up on all our tables.
These businesses are not just employers and exporters; they are anchors in their communities, sustaining local economies and upholding the highest standards of British food.
Congratulations to the winner, Chalk Stream, and to all the regional finalists.🎉
