As part of the plan to improve health outcomes, public health services will be given more money to deliver prevention programmes, tailored to their residents.
Amanda Hack MP has welcomed an increase in funding for public health services in Leicestershire, which is part of a £200 million national funding boost to the Public Health Grant. This represents the largest real-terms increase after nearly a decade of reduced spending under the previous government.
Leicestershire County Council is set to receive nearly £30 million to support essential health services, ranging from smoking cessation to children’s health, and to help fund family and school nurses, sexual health clinics, and other health services.
Amanda Hack said:
“As a passionate advocate for Public Health, and a county councillor who previously sat on the Health Scrutiny Committee for 5 years, I am delighted that we are continuing to fulfil our promise to enhance health outcomes for people across Leicestershire as part of our plan for change.
We must continue working together to deliver increased prevention-based support. This will give people better access to services and relieve pressure on more traditional care settings, enabling those who need the support of GPs or consultants to access those services. This funding will help drive key health initiatives in our community, continuing the move away from cure-lead care to preventing people from falling into ill health in the first place.
Having already met with many of our local GP practises and the North West Leicestershire GP Federation, I will continue working closely with our health teams to enhance services, continue cutting waiting lists, and improve the health of local people.”
The Government has been running a national conversation to help build a health service fit for the future and shape a new 10 Year Health Plan for England. The plan will set out how to focus on preventing sickness, not just treating it, with this investment supporting that aim.

An Early Christmas present for Coalville! 🎁
Earlier this month I was pleased to learn that Network Rail have withdrawn their objections to the reopening of Scotlands Footpath (N111) in Coalville after interventions from my team, working with Amy Shepherd and the Open Spaces Society 🥾.
Pending a meeting between Leicestershire County Council and Network Rail pencilled-in for early 2026, we should see the footpath reopen for use later in the year; I will continue to update you as I receive more information.

Great to see that BCSSS members will be getting their first increased payments today, just in time for Christmas!!Following continued action over the past 12 months on the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme, over 750 former mineworkers in North West Leicestershire will now see their pensions rise by 40%, thanks to the Labour Government’s transfer of the £2.3bn investment reserve back to scheme members.
That’s an average of £100 per week back into the pockets of those who once powered our nation.
I am so pleased that we have secured this outcome during the budget. This change will make a real difference to the lives of local people and their families. A big thank you must go to the campaigners, constituents and coalfield colleagues who have been engaged in the lobbying efforts to right this injustice.
From Coalville to Measham, Moira, and beyond, our industrial heritage has shaped the local landscape. For generations, our former miners powered this country, and it’s only right that we recognise their sacrifices.
We’re not just providing financial support; we’re also improving healthcare for respiratory illnesses through our Men’s Health Strategy. It recognises the additional care often needed in our former industrial communities, where health inequalities are higher.
I’m proud of our local industrial heritage. It touches nearly every part of North West Leicestershire, and I’m proud that our Labour Government is delivering the support our former mineworkers deserve.
