  • British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS) Letter to James Murray MP

As some of you may have seen, following the cabinet reshuffle, James Murray MP has now been made the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Last week I met with both the Neighbourhood Commander and Deputy in Castle Donington for a beat walk around the Craner Road area and to discuss a number of different topics, including:

🚗Car Cruising & options / action around enforcement (I am being kept up to date on the RTC at the weekend)
👮‍♀️Local crime rates and trends
📊Broader crime trends across North West Leicestershire
🚓Extra patrols in Ashby & Coalville as part of the summer blitz
🛴Tackling illegal e-scooter usage
🦮An update on the recent dog attack

I meet with the team regularly, providing feedback on the issues that matter to you and discussing how we can make North West Leicestershire safer.

Let me know where we should go on the next beat walk in the comments below.

Our Renters Rights Bill will be a major step forward in improving standards and fairness in the rental market.

Here’s what the Bill will deliver:

✅ Ban no-fault evictions
✅ End rental bidding wars
✅ Protect tenants from dangerous damp and mould
✅ Make it illegal for letting agents to discriminate against tenants on benefits or with children
✅ Strengthen councils’ powers to enforce the rules

Everyone deserves a safe and decent home. This Bill will make a real difference in raising standards and ensuring fair access to rented properties across our communities.

Thank you to those who attended the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS) meeting alongside the Trustees and myself recently. It was a very productive discussion at Century Theatre with over 100 people attending.

For all those who got in touch to be kept up to date, and for those who attended the meeting, the notes and additional information will be available to you this week, either via email or sent in the post.

I will continue to call on the government to:

✅Waive the final £2.3 billion payment from the BCSSS reserve, thereby ensuring fairer pensions for members who served in essential roles within the coal industry.

It’s time to deliver parity for everyone in our coalfield communities.

What an amazing event celebrating 100 years of Midland Red’s Coalville Bus Garage. Congratulations to all those involved.

Absolutely buzzing or should I say ‘Bus…ing’.

Plenty of time left to visit, it’s on until 4:30pm today and well worth a visit.

Good to meet up with Cllr Catherine Beck at the Food Festival in Marlborough Square today.

Loads of food stalls on offer and we couldn’t resist an Ice Cream from Cool Guys in Newmarket.

Great atmosphere on this beautiful afternoon. On until 4pm.

I recently held a roundtable for parents of children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND). We discussed the difficulties of navigating the SEND system, examples of best practice and parents' hopes for the future.

I'm grateful to everyone who attended and shared their experiences and views. Hearing directly from families means I can feedback to my colleagues in government and help shape the SEND system.

From this week, parents locally are entitled to 30 hours of government funded childcare.
This will save £7,500 on average.
