Filling in potholes isn’t just about making roads safer for everyone; it also helps prevent unnecessary and unexpected repair costs for drivers, which can often run into hundreds of pounds.

As part of a major uplift in funding for road maintenance (£144m for Leicestershire, on top of last year’s £28.5m) the Department for Transport is rating local councils on how well they fill potholes and look after their roads.

These ratings are based on three key areas:

🚦 Road condition: How good or bad the state of local roads is
💰 Council spending: How much councils invest in road repairs
🛠️ Best practice: Whether councils follow best practice in maintaining highways

Some of this funding was put to good use last summer in Coalville, where several roads were resurfaced, a welcome and long-overdue improvement for local road users. However, the data shows that we are still lagging behind other councils when it comes to following best practice and overall spend on road maintenance, which is disappointing.
