I’ve been working alongside the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme trustees, Government ministers and fellow coalfield MPs to secure the justice that former mineworkers and their families deserve after years of campaigning.

The recent release of nearly £1.6 billion from the Investment Reserve has already led to higher pensions for over 1500 former mineworkers in North West Leicestershire, seeing their pensions rise by £29 per week and delivered as part of our first budget in Government.

While that was welcome progress, there is still more to achieve following that work.
After meeting with the trustees and other colleagues earlier this week, I will continue pushing the Government to:

✅ Ensure 100% of future surpluses are returned to scheme members
✅ Protect bonus pensions from future cuts by ending “stand still” arrangements
✅ Release the remaining £1 billion unallocated surplus to provide a further boost to pensions
