Update on the Flooding at Lockington Bridge
I’ve written to Leicestershire County Council regarding the continued flooding under the bridges on Main Street. The pumps installed at the site did not prevent flooding during Storm Claudia, and it’s important we understand whether they failed to operate or are simply not adequate for the job.
Given last year’s 19-day road closure, it’s essential that a long-term solution is put in place to stop this from happening repeatedly. I’ve asked the Council to investigate the pump failure and to set out their plans for a permanent fix.
I’ll keep residents updated as soon as I receive further information. ... See MoreSee Less

For too long, ticket touts have been ripping off fans, using bots to grab huge batches of tickets, then reselling them at sky-high prices. They’ve built a shadow industry on resale sites, operating without consequence.
That ends now.
Our new proposals will crack down on the touts and make world-class music, comedy and theatre affordable again.
The UK is home to incredible artists and performers but when fans get shut out, the only winners are the touts. That’s why we’re taking bold action to break their business model and make sure more people can enjoy their favourite events at a fair price.
Affordable tickets. Fair access. Fans first. ... See MoreSee Less

Following some important announcements on Women’s Health earlier this year, I’m pleased to welcome the UK Government’s publication of England’s first ever Men’s Health Strategy today, on International Men’s Day.
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among men under 50. A few months ago, I spoke in the debate on suicide prevention, and I’m glad to see this strategy, shaped by men from across the UK, finally published today.
The strategy tackles both physical and mental health challenges facing men. Importantly, it also includes targeted measures for communities like ours, shaped by a heritage of coal mining. Research shows that former coalfield areas experience lower life expectancy and higher rates of long-term illness, so this focus is particularly welcome.
Here’s a snapshot of why this strategy matters to our community:
❤️🩹 It tackles mental health and suicide, a crisis that disproportionately affects men, especially in former industrial areas.
🩻 It recognises lung disease in former miners; the strategy includes enhanced respiratory support in areas with significant mining heritage.
💷 £3 Million for local initiatives that reach men who may not use traditional health services.
🩺 Home PSA Tests – From 2027, men with prostate cancer may be able to test at home or book via the NHS App.
🏢 Workplace Health Pilots – Programs in male-dominated industries to support men at work.
🤝 Breaking Barriers – Focusing on loneliness, social isolation, and helping men access support where they are, like sports clubs and workplaces.
This is a government taking men’s health seriously, and I welcome it wholeheartedly for the benefit of our families, fathers, and grandfathers. ... See MoreSee Less

This week is National Road Safety Week!
Right across North West Leicestershire, I’ve heard from many residents about concerns over speeding, dangerous driving, and pedestrian safety, especially around schools and busy junctions.
I've already worked with the local community in Griffydam to press Leicestershire County Council into taking action on a road junction, a crossing assessment outside the local school, and to conduct speed surveys in the area. That's alongside working closely with local councillors and the police in Castle Donington and Kegworth around measures that can be, and are being taken, to combat the car cruising we see in the area, and that's just a snapshot of some of the work locally!
Road safety isn’t just a transport issue though. It’s about protecting lives, supporting families, and making sure everyone feels confident using our streets.
I’m proud that Labour’s upcoming Road Safety Strategy will focus on delivering safer roads for everyone.

I recently spoke with Simon Dunn from the British Heart Foundation as part of The Defib Dash. Simon looks after The Circuit which is the National defib registry for the UK. www.defibfinder.uk/
Simon spoke to me about what happens when you find yourself in an emrgency situation and what you can expect when you call 999.
The aim of the Defib Dash isn’t just to highlight where defibs are missing, but to get all of us thinking about a few key questions:
Do you know how far away your nearest defibrillator is?
Could someone get to it quickly in an emergency?
Where else in the community might one be needed most?
Don't forget to 'Dash' to your nearest defib this week and submit your findings here: www.amandahack.com/campaigns/defib-dash-submission/

🚨Update The government review that is mentioned in the clip is now underway. This has been confirmed by the sponsor of the Private Members Bill 🚨
Many people have contacted me over the last few weeks about fireworks and the need to review the legislation surrounding them. I recently spoke about this on BBC Politics on Sunday.
Last week, members of my team also attended the drop-in event organised by the Fireworks Impact Coalition to discuss the need for better regulation to help protect our animals and vulnerable people.

Fantastic to be out in Ashby yesterday alongside some local councillors to talk with you about the upcoming Defib Dash! You can find out more information about the Defib Dash and sign up to take part here: www.amandahack.com/defib-dash-faqs/
By ‘dashing’ to your nearest defibrillator and timing your journey, you will help shine a light on the ‘defib deserts’ that exist in our area.
Too many of our neighbourhoods are without quick access to life-saving defibrillators, and that gap can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Earlier this week I spoke to BBC Radio Leicester about the growing costs and delays facing learner drivers, especially the rise in test swapping and third-party reselling.
I’ve been pushing for action on this for some time, including writing to the Minister for Local Transport alongside 38 colleagues to urge change.
I’m pleased the Secretary of State has now announced new measures to limit test swaps, ensure only genuine learners can book tests, and bring in additional examiners to cut the backlog.
These steps will help make driving tests fairer, more affordable, and easier to access.

This afternoon I visited residents on Grace Dieu Road who were affected by last night’s flooding alongside Cllr Peter Moult.
I’ve already reported the sewage that surfaced through the manholes, and a street clean is scheduled to be completed by the end of Monday at the latest. I’ve also reported several blocked highway drains, now clogged with debris, to Leicestershire County Council.
I’ll be writing formally to Severn Trent about the ongoing sewage flooding issues residents are facing, and will continue working with the relevant agencies to push for a long-term solution. ... See MoreSee Less
