An Early Christmas present for Coalville! 🎁

Earlier this month I was pleased to learn that Network Rail have withdrawn their objections to the reopening of Scotlands Footpath (N111) in Coalville after interventions from my team, working with Amy Shepherd and the Open Spaces Society 🥾.

Pending a meeting between Leicestershire County Council and Network Rail pencilled-in for early 2026, we should see the footpath reopen for use later in the year; I will continue to update you as I receive more information.

Great to see that BCSSS members will be getting their first increased payments today, just in time for Christmas!!Following continued action over the past 12 months on the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme, over 750 former mineworkers in North West Leicestershire will now see their pensions rise by 40%, thanks to the Labour Government’s transfer of the £2.3bn investment reserve back to scheme members.

That’s an average of £100 per week back into the pockets of those who once powered our nation.

I am so pleased that we have secured this outcome during the budget. This change will make a real difference to the lives of local people and their families. A big thank you must go to the campaigners, constituents and coalfield colleagues who have been engaged in the lobbying efforts to right this injustice.

From Coalville to Measham, Moira, and beyond, our industrial heritage has shaped the local landscape. For generations, our former miners powered this country, and it’s only right that we recognise their sacrifices.

We’re not just providing financial support; we’re also improving healthcare for respiratory illnesses through our Men’s Health Strategy. It recognises the additional care often needed in our former industrial communities, where health inequalities are higher.

I’m proud of our local industrial heritage. It touches nearly every part of North West Leicestershire, and I’m proud that our Labour Government is delivering the support our former mineworkers deserve.

Backing Our Farmers 🌽

Over the past year, alongside colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG), I’ve continued to work closely with local farmers. I’ve met with more than 50 farmers across North West Leicestershire and have consistently pressed the Government to rethink its Inheritance and Property relief proposals.

Through ongoing discussions with NFU representatives at both local and national level, including many visits to local farms, I’ve been able to provide Treasury colleagues with clear, real-world examples of how these proposals would impact our farming community.

I welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget change allowing simpler transfers of reliefs between married couples. However, alongside a number of colleagues, I chose to abstain on Budget Motion 50 (Inheritance Tax and the limitation of agricultural and business property reliefs). This abstention allowed us to register our concerns, in line with calls from organisations such as the NFU, while keeping a seat at the table to continue pushing for change.

I’m really pleased that, following many private meetings, letters, and conversations with Ministers, Government colleagues have now agreed to raise the threshold from £1 million to £2.5 million. This means spouses or civil partners can pass on up to £5 million in qualifying agricultural or business assets before paying inheritance tax – on top of existing allowances.

This clip is a short extract from my speech during the Budget Debate, where I asked the Front Bench to keep Inheritance Tax thresholds under review following the Farming Profitability Review, which was published earlier this week (speech time was very limited!).

This is part of my wider, ongoing work to secure a fairer deal for our farmers, making sure they are paid fairly and properly supported for the vital work they do to feed our nation. I’ll continue working closely with the NFU, our local farming community, and colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group to keep delivering for rural Britain.

Last week I spoke in the adjournment debate on Sudden Cardiac Death in Young People (This is just a short extract from that speech).
This vital debate followed Cardiac Risk in the Young's recent drop-in session at Portcullis House earlier this month, which I was proud to host.

I was glad to speak in the debate about the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to saving young lives, including wider access to cardiac screening, CPR training, and defibrillators, of which I have already been working towards locally with the recent Defib Dash.

Looking ahead to January, I’m pleased to share that the Cardiac Risk in the Young APPG will be re-established, and I will be chairing the group. Together, we will continue these crucial conversations in Parliament and drive forward CRY’s work towards a national strategy to prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young people.

🏡 Good news for new property occupants!

Back in March, I co-sponsored a 10-minute rule bill on unadopted estates (Housing Estates Bill). I’m really pleased that the Minister has now announced that two-thirds of the bill’s proposals will be taken forward through consultations on how to reduce the use of private estate management arrangements.

I know how frustrating unadopted estates can be for local people. I have already worked on behalf of residents across North West Leicestershire, including in Kegworth, raising concerns about new developments where people are left with unfinished roads, inadequate drainage, and high, opaque management fees.

The Housing Minister has now announced two consultations to:

✅Protect people from unfair charges.
✅Stop estates being left unadopted.

This is a key step towards ending fleecehold and giving residents a better deal. You can have your say via the links below:
