🚒 More Funding for Leicestershire Fire Service 🚒
Some good news for Leicestershire Fire Service. The Labour Government has announced a £22.8 million funding boost over the next three years — a 28% increase in core spending power.
I’ve been raising this with Ministers over the past year, and was talking about on BBC Politics East Midlands just last week, so it’s encouraging to see progress being made.
Importantly, this is the first multi-year settlement in over a decade, giving the Fire Service three years of certainty to plan ahead.
This funding settlement is an important step towards strengthening our Fire Service. I will continue to engage with Leicestershire Fire Service and Ministers to ensure they receive the resources they need to keep our communities safe. ... See MoreSee Less

📢 Fairer Funding Deal for Leicestershire 📢
Great news for Leicestershire! The Labour Government has announced a £144.8 million funding boost for Leicestershire County Council over the next three years — a 25% increase in core spending power for essential local services.
For too long, Councils like Leicestershire were underfunded. Since 2010, core spending power fell by around a quarter, forcing difficult cuts to services people rely on — from social care and transport to libraries and education.
This Fair Funding settlement is a major step towards reversing years of austerity and rebuilding stronger, fairer communities. It also comes alongside plans for Local Government Reorganisation, which will help unlock efficiencies and further investment in frontline services.
Crucially, this is the first multi-year local government settlement in over a decade, giving councils three years of financial certainty so they can plan ahead. ... See MoreSee Less

👉 Local pharmacies can also offer advice and support for many health concerns.

It’s good to see that the steps we have been taking to tackle the re-selling of driving test are starting to work.
Since April 2025, we have seen a sustained drop in test swaps thanks to changes to cancellation periods and the terms and conditions of the booking service. That’s alongside banning over 850 rogue accounts from the booking system to try and prevent those exploiting the system and bots from re-selling tests at astronomical prices.
Thanks to these measures, test swapping is now at the lowest level in 4 years. 📉
I’m confident that with the legislative changes announced recently by the Secretary of State for Transport, meaning that only learners can book tests, this downward trend will continue, meaning tests will be kept a step removed from resellers and prices will continue to drop.
At the start of this month, I also met with my excellent local driving instructor community to discuss the forthcoming changes and a range of new ideas on how we can tackle the backlog more broadly, which I will be sharing with Government colleagues soon.

Our Government has launched a landmark 10-year plan for the next generation: Youth Matters – Your National Youth Strategy.
This marks a complete break from a decade of neglect, during which youth centres closed across the country. It’s a comprehensive, cross-government strategy shaped by the voices of over 14,000 young people, including those from North West Leicestershire, whom I met earlier this year at Ashby School.
From restoring neighbourhood policing and rolling out Mental Health Support Teams in schools, to lowering the voting age to 16 and funding new youth centres, we are delivering for young people.
We are making sure every young person has someone who cares, somewhere to go, and something to do.
And we’re not stopping there. We’re also investing in grassroots sports facilities and expanding our youth worker workforce, strengthening community, connection, and belonging. These were priorities young people themselves raised with me: feeling connected to their communities, safe spaces to go and be themselves and having opportunities to give back.
That's all alongside better employment support for those young people out of work:
350,000 new training or workplace opportunities in sectors including construction, hospitality, health and social care will be provided to young people on Universal Credit.
900,000 young people on Universal Credit will benefit from a dedicated work support session, followed by four weeks of intensive support.
55,000 young people stand to gain from a government-backed guaranteed job, which will begin roll-out from spring 2026 in the regions of highest need. ... See MoreSee Less

Puppy smuggling is now officially banned!🐶🚫
With the Animal Welfare Bill becoming law, it’s now prohibited to:
❌Import puppies or kittens under 6 months old, as well as animals that are heavily pregnant, cropped, or declawed.
🚘Transport more than 5 animals in a single vehicle.
These changes aim to ensure pets are moved safely, kept healthy, and protected from abusive or exploitative breeding practices.
This bill was introduced as a Private Members Bill and passed its third reading whilst I attended a Friday sitting day in July.
I’ll do a post on Private members bills in general in the new year. ... See MoreSee Less

We’re funding travel for 35,000 service personnel so they can come home for Christmas 🎄
They currently don’t qualify for support, but we are changing that.
This builds on the actions Labour has already taken this year to support our armed forces:
✅️ The largest pay rise in twenty years
✅️ The biggest increase in defence spending since the Cold War
✅️ A major £9bn programme to renew armed forces housing, bringing tens of thousands of homes back into public ownership
✅️ OpVALOUR Veteran Support Service
✅️ Reformed social housing rules to ensure homeless veterans are prioritised ... See MoreSee Less
