Great to host a coffee morning earlier today at Ashby de la Zouch town council.

We had a great conversation and covered a number of things from the NHS, Police, local government reorganisation, transport, Ivanhoe, Speeding and the unfair cost of a holiday during the summer.

My next coffee morning will focus on Leaseholders. Letters are currently being delivered on my behalf thanks to a team of great volunteers.

If you would like to attend please just contact the office.

There is much more to our days in Westminster other than what goes on in the House of Commons. When I’m not in the chamber I’m often engaging with colleagues including members of the House of Lords, working with businesses, responding to matters in Westminster Hall or attending meetings or briefing in relation to legislation.

So I thought I’d take you though a typical day from Tuesday this week (we had legislation on Tuesday so this was more a typical day).

Great to start the day alongside Framework Housing and the release of their important research report undertaken by Imogen Blood on the work of supported housing.

online.flippingbook.com/view/45198605/

Then spent some time with Bloc at a round table of small businesses. Bloc has recently released a report on Small Businesses. We discussed everything from access to finance, investments, tax, AI and tech, late payments, planning and licensing. It was great to spend time with some inspiring entrepreneurs.
Report is here

Then onto a debate in Westminster Hall on Safety of Women whilst our Running, Walking, Cycling and wheeling. Safety and ensuring women can feel safe is an important part of the challenge we have to half violence against women and girls.

I then made my way over to the book of condolence for Holocaust Memorial Day, to sign on behalf of my constituents.

Then onto a Delegated Legislation Committee. This is where a piece of primary legislation is in place and we need to update secondary legislation.

In the House of Commons there had been a statement on the changes to Business Rates for Pubs as well as the update to Leasehold Reform so I was keeping an eye on what had been discussed.

We also voted on new legislation around Medical Training.

Finally, it was great to sponsor the annual dinner of the Food and Drink Wholesale Association, alongside so many wholesalers and industry experts. It was good to hear about the Food Resilience Commission that will be chaired by my colleague Daniel Zeichner on how we can work with industry and government on Food Security. I’ll be sharing with Ministers the conversation and important insights from the sector.

🚆 Ivanhoe Line Debate

I was proud to lead the first ever dedicated debate on restoring The Ivanhoe Line.

I want to thank all my constituents who shared their stories, either recently, or as part of my previous transport survey about how reinstating the Ivanhoe Line would impact daily lives :

➡️ 90% rely on cars because public transport just isn’t good enough
➡️ 72% said poor public transport prevents them getting where they need to go
➡️ 97% support restoring the Ivanhoe Line

There is no doubt in my mind, nor in the minds of local people, that restoring passenger rail is a priority.

As the Minister acknowledged, I will continue to push, advocate, and hold the department’s feet to the fire to see the Ivanhoe Line reinstated, for both the people of North West Leicestershire and the communities that call The National Forest home.

A link to the full debate can be found in the comments!

(I had to talk fast at this part as I was running out of time!)

🚉 A historic day for the Ivanhoe Line

Yesterday I was proud to lead the first ever parliamentary debate focused solely on the Ivanhoe Line.

This line helped shape our area. It played a key role in supporting local industry, and connected communities long before many of the towns as we know them today even existed.

Closed to passengers in 1964 (Not 2064 as I nearly said.. I'm only human!!), the Ivanhoe Line has never left local minds. Campaigns to restore it have continued for decades, a testament to how strongly people feel about its importance.

I was proud to share some of the history of the line and our local area as part of this historic debate and I'll be sharing little clips over the coming days of different parts of my speech.

This debate matters, not just for the past, but for the future of connectivity, opportunity and growth across North West Leicestershire and beyond.

🚉 The Ivanhoe Line’s story isn’t over.

You can watch the full debate via the link in the comments.

🚨Response to the Leicestershire Police Budget 🚓

The unprecedented lack of support for the PCC’s budget from Leicestershire’s rightly concerned Chief Constable is yet another damning indictment of Rupert Matthews and how Reform UK want to take our public services backwards.

The proposed changes will create a £4.7m budget deficit for Leicestershire Police – with the Reform PCC acknowledging it means the force needs to make savings of, in his words, ‘just’ £1.2m in the next year – and see them lose around £6m over the next four years, equivalent to over 140 frontline officers.

As local MPs, we meet with residents every week whose lives are blighted by crime and anti-social behaviour. Our constituents deserve a police force where the focus is on fighting crime and rebuilding the neighbourhood policing that was decimated by the PCC’s former party.

Reform needs to tell the law-abiding people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland how many police officers will be cut and which crimes will go unpunished as a result of their PCC’s decision, as it is the residents who will suffer the most.

Reform’s only PCC has lost the support of his Chief Constable on this budget whilst our Labour Government is investing in neighbourhood policing and bringing forward changes to make our communities safer. It’s clear to see which party is on the side of law and order.

Young people are trying to get the best start in life, but too often the first step is blocked by a lack of reliable transport.

A resident recently shared how her 16-year-old daughter has to leave home at 6:30am, wait for hours, and sometimes has no bus home at all. That’s not just inconvenient, it’s a barrier to education and opportunity.

We know there’s a skills gap in our region.
So how can we expect young people to engage in training, college, or apprenticeships if they can’t even get there?

We need transport that works for students, apprentices, and families.

I’ll keep battling for better buses, better reliability, and the best start in life for our young people. 🚌

🚌 Rural bus services have been cut for too long across North West Leicestershire.

The new government funding is a step in the right direction to protect and enhance rural connectivity, but we still need better, more reliable services that people can actually plan their lives around.

I’ve seen and heard first hand how cuts and changes have hit our towns and villages, making it harder to get to work, college, healthcare and see family. It’s not always easy working with county colleagues to fight for the services you need and deserve.

But I’ll keep battling for better buses that our communities can depend on. 🚌

The Holocaust stands as one of the darkest stains on humanity: the systematic murder of six million Jews, each one an individual life extinguished by a hatred that sought to erase the entire Jewish people.

As we mark Holocaust Memorial Day, we confront that truth directly, because remembrance is the first defence against denial, distortion and prejudice.

Together, we look back and challenge antisemitism wherever it appears. And ensure that ‘never again’ is a promise we uphold, not just a phrase we repeat.
