I'm really pleased to see that Leicestershire County Council have decided NOT to close the specialist SEND nurseries across the county following the strength of feeling from residents across Leicestershire.
I heard from a number of constituents who contacted me to raise their concerns that the possible closures further disregard the struggles faced by parents and guardians of SEND children.
Having met with the Chief Executive of Menphys to listen to the impact that these closures will have on Leicestershire residents, inside and outside of my constituency, I submitted my response based on those experiences of my constituents.
This was another example of unwarranted cuts by the current administration at county hall. That follows cuts announced to the School Food Service earlier this year and allowing our bus routes in North West Leicestershire to be cut, despite extra government funding. ... See MoreSee Less

Through an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill, our Labour Government will require tech companies to remove non-consensual intimate images within 48 hours of them being flagged. Companies that fail to act will face serious consequences, including fines of up to 10% of their global revenue or even having their service blocked in the UK.
Platforms will be required to proactively detect and remove abusive intimate images, treating this material with the same seriousness as child sexual abuse and terrorist content.
For victims, the process will be simpler and stronger. You will only need to report an image once. After that, it will be removed across multiple platforms and automatically blocked from being re-uploaded.
Ofcom is also considering measures to digitally mark these images so they can be automatically detected and taken down if they reappear online.
We will also issue guidance to internet providers to block access to rogue websites hosting this content.
No one should face intimidation or distress because of repeated intimate image abuse. We are acting to make the online world safer, and to ensure those who fail to protect people are held accountable. ... See MoreSee Less

Major research published this week by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) delivers a powerful and timely message: cardiac screening saves young lives.
The largest-ever study of its kind, published in the prestigious Journal of the American College of Cardiology, analysed data from more than 104,000 young people aged 14-35 who were screened through CRY’s nationwide programme between 2008 and 2018.
The findings are significant:
➡️1 in 300 young people screened were found to have a potentially life-threatening heart condition
➡️41% of those diagnosed went on to receive vital interventions - including pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac surgery and, in two cases, heart transplants
➡️A simple ECG test demonstrated 77% sensitivity, with a very low false positive rate of just 2.1%
➡️Importantly, there was no meaningful difference in risk between athletes and non-athletes -reinforcing the case that screening should be available to all young people, not just those in competitive sport
Every week in the UK, 12 young people aged 35 and under lose their lives to undiagnosed heart conditions. Behind each statistic is a devastated family and a future cut tragically short.
As the chair of the APPG for Cardiac Risk in the Young, I believe this research strengthens the case for wider access to cardiac screening and greater awareness of the risks. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to act on this evidence and help prevent avoidable deaths.

After speaking with LINK last week, under the current assessment scheme, Coalville does not qualify for a Banking Hub.
I immediately raised the case with a Treasury Minister privately and did so again yesterday during a Westminster Hall debate on the subject. I specifically raised the point around access to business banking services, which will be lost due to the closure of Lloyds.
I am in the process of formalising an appeal to LINK regarding the assessment that has taken place for a Banking Hub in Coalville and will be submitting this shortly. I would urge local residents and other stakeholders, especially current customers of Lloyds, to sign my petition to help show the strength of feeling on this issue.

🚨 Energy bills to fall by 7% 🚨
From April, the energy price cap is set to fall by £117, thanks to action taken by this Labour government.
This is welcome news, but we know there is still more to do to end the era of high energy bills for good. That’s why we’re:
✅ Delivering the biggest ever public investment in home upgrades through our Warm Homes Plan
✅ Investing record amounts in clean, homegrown power to cut our reliance on volatile fossil fuel prices
✅ Expanded the Warm Homes Discount, which has provided £150 off bills for nearly 6 million families this winter
We’ll keep working to bring bills down, tackle the coat of living and make homes warmer and cheaper to run. ... See MoreSee Less

Yesterday, the Schools White Paper was published by the Education Secretary, setting out proposals to improve the SEND system that has been letting down families and schools for far too long.
Through roundtables and day-to-day casework, I’ve spoken to many parents about the battles they face to secure the support their child needs. I’ve also met with most schools across the constituency, and the local college, who are doing everything they can to support children while they wait for an EHCP – often without additional resources, because some extra funding is only triggered once the EHCP process is complete.
From these conversations, I know that even when an EHCP is finally in place, support can come too late, affecting outcomes for children. That is why these proposals are designed to bring about earlier intervention to support children with additional needs, to make sure they get the best start in life.
After all of the conversations I’ve had with you, I know you feel that the current system is often too adversarial, exhausting and failing the very children it is meant to help. These proposals aim to change that.
Key measures in the White Paper include:
➡️ £1.6 billion will go straight to early years settings, schools and colleges to fund targeted help to make sure children get support where and when they need it.
➡️ £1.8 billion will create an “Experts at Hand” service – a bank of specialists like SEND teachers, speech & language therapists and more, available locally for every school with or without an EHCP in place, meaning every child will be able to access these resources if they need them.
➡️ £200 million to ensure every teacher is trained to support SEND pupils.
➡️ £3.7 billion to create tens of thousands of new places in Inclusion Bases in mainstream settings, improve the accessibility of buildings and create new special school places.
There is also a lot of misinformation circulating online, so I want to be clear about what the proposals actually say:
➡️ New legal rights: Every child with SEND will have a legal right to an Individual Support Plan (ISP) or EHCP.
➡️ Protection for EHCPs: Existing plans will remain protected. Any transitions from EHCPs to ISPs for mainstream pupils would not begin until 2030, and only at natural transition points (such as moving to secondary school).
➡️ No forced moves: No child currently in a special school will be required to move to a mainstream school.
➡️ The option of tribunal as a last resort will be retained.
The measures set out above are just a snapshot of the key areas we are looking at to change the system for the better and make sure our kids, families and schools, get the support they need sooner.
You can find out more details here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-send-reforms-sheets
To be clear these are proposals that we are now consulting on following the biggest ever conversation about the SEND system. I am committed to continuing to support schools, teachers and parents in understanding these proposals and ensuring your voices are heard during the consultation.
The consultation on the Schools White Paper is open until 18 May 2026.

*UPDATE - You can read my detailed post following the launch of the White Paper here: www.facebook.com/share/p/182nSDwh65/?mibextid=wwXIfr *
Today we’re announcing a £4 billion investment to help make every school truly inclusive through specialist support in every school to improve outcomes for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
This comes alongside the publication of the schools white paper later today.
Over the past 18 months, I’ve held multiple roundtables with parents of children with SEND and local teachers to hear directly about their experiences. I’ve shared that feedback in meetings with the Secretary of State for Education to ensure your voices are heard.
The Minister for Schools has also hosted several online discussions over the past year, and I know many local constituents have taken part to ensure your voices are heard.
Here's what some of this funding means:
✅ £1.6 billion will go straight to early years settings, schools and colleges to fund targeted help to make sure children get support where and when they need it.
✅ £1.8 billion will create an “Experts at Hand” service – a bank of specialists like SEND teachers, speech & language therapists and more, available locally for every school with or without an EHCP in place, meaning every child will be able to access these resources if they need them.
