  • A look forward to 2026

Over the past year, alongside colleagues in the Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG), I’ve continued to work closely with local farmers. I’ve met with more than 50 farmers across North West Leicestershire and have consistently pressed the Government to rethink its Inheritance and Property relief proposals.

Back in March, I co-sponsored a 10-minute rule bill on unadopted estates (Housing Estates Bill). I’m really pleased that the Minister has now announced that two-thirds of the bill’s proposals will be taken forward through consultations on how to reduce the use of private estate management arrangements.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has unveiled our new Animal Welfare Strategy, bringing forward some of the strongest changes to animal welfare in a generation.

This delivers on our manifesto promise and ensures our laws finally catch up with the evidence, improving the lives of animals in our homes, on farms, and in the wild.

Key measures include:

🐶 Pets & Companion Animals

👉Reforming dog breeding to improve health and welfare and end puppy farming
👉Consulting on a ban on electric shock collars due to the harm they can cause
👉Considering new licensing for rescue and rehoming organisations to ensure proper checks
👉Promoting responsible dog ownership to protect public safety

🐄 Farm Animals

👉Moving away from confinement systems like colony cages for laying hens and pig farrowing crates
👉Addressing welfare concerns around the use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs
👉Introducing humane slaughter requirements for farmed fish
👉Promoting the use of slower-growing meat chicken breeds

🦌 Wildlife

👉Banning trail hunting, amid concerns it is being used as a smokescreen for hunting
👉Banning snare traps, which cause suffering and can catch pets
👉Introducing a close season for hares to protect them during breeding season

This strategy represents a major step forward for animal welfare across the UK. 🐾

🚨 Safety Warning – Frozen Lakes 🚨

This afternoon we responded to a concerning incident at Hermitage fishing lakes where a group of youths were seen walking out onto the ice.
Our officers attended, spoke with the group, and gave strong words of advice.

We’ll also be working with local schools to reinforce the message that this is extremely dangerous.

Please remember: if you fall through the ice, the chances of survival are very slim. Stay safe and keep away from frozen water.

I’ve been contacted by a couple of local residents in the vicinity of Vaughan Street and Wentworth Road in Coalville since last night regarding what looks like a burst water pipe under the road!

Severn Trent are now on site assessing the problem and I’ve also contacted Leicestershire County Council Highways who are due to come out and assess the road surface.

Please take care when travelling through the area as the road surface is incredibly icy.

In emergencies like burst pipes Severn Trent Water can be contacted on 0800 783 4444 and LCC highways here: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-maintenance/report-a-road-problem (When out of hours the main phone number will have a mobile number for emergency call outs)

Good News as the Chicken Pox Vaccine is added to the childhood vaccination programme. For many, our memories of getting the chicken pox was being covered in calamine lotion and being very uncomfortable, but for some it can be more severe and need hospital care.

Information on the rollout is below 👇From today, hundreds of thousands of children will start to be offered protection against chickenpox as part of the free, routine NHS childhood vaccinations.

GP surgeries will contact families to arrange appointments.

It’s been a busy year representing you, both here in North West Leicestershire and in Westminster. From fighting for fairer pensions for our former miners to pushing for the best start in life for our kids, it remains a real privilege to serve our community.

Meeting you across the constituency remains my favourite part of the job. Whether it’s on the doorstep, at constituency surgeries, at community events, or at local businesses, listening to your concerns and delivering on the priorities that matter to you is what drives me every day.

Since becoming your MP, I’ve received more than 55,000 inquiries and comments, and that’s before I even consider my social media engagement! Responding to your requests for help and championing North West Leicestershire will always be my top priority. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to get in touch.

I promised to be accessible, and I’ve kept to that commitment by holding more than 30 constituency surgeries and knocking on thousands of doors throughout the year, not just at election time. Whether supporting residents affected by flooding or meeting parents of children with SEND needs, no issue is too big or too small if it matters to you.

Alongside this, I’ve continued battling for better buses in the face of service cuts, pushing for a rail connection to help people travel more easily, and taking on the challenge of sewage pollution affecting our waterways, and in some cases, even our streets.

As we look ahead to 2026, I’ll continue working hard to listen, support, and stand up for our communities. I’m committed to ensuring it remains a wonderful place to live, work and visit and that’s something you can join me in too.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have been working through the festive period and those who are on duty over midnight to keep everyone safe.

If you need any support or just want to have a chat about something that matters to you, please contact me via [email protected], call my office on 01530 569 010 or by post at 109 Belvoir Road, Coalville, LE67 3PH.

Wishing you all the best for a happy and prosperous 2026.
