The Help to Save scheme, originally due to close in 2027, will now be made permanent and extended to parents and carers on Universal Credit from 2028.
Described by Martin Lewis as “unbeatable,” the scheme lets eligible savers put away up to £2,400 over four years, with a £1,200 government bonus added on top — helping families build up savings and a financial cushion for emergencies like a broken boiler.
From 2028, the scheme will be opened up to an additional 1.5 million people, including Universal Credit claimants with children in education and carers who provide at least 35 hours of care each week, offering extra support with the cost of living.
