Really proud to have spoken in Parliament about the history of some of our towns and how they could benefit from applying to be the new UK Town of Culture!
Culture isn’t just about big cities, it’s about the everyday pride, heritage, creativity and volunteers that make our towns special. From the community spirit of our towns to their markets, history and local events, culture brings people together, boosts local pride and can help attract investment opportunities for everyone.
I'm excited to see towns across the country and locally here in North West Leicestershire put themselves forward and share their stories.
Every place has a story worth telling. 📣🎨📍 ... See MoreSee Less

With the snow thawing and temperatures dropping here’s some practical advice for driving on icy roads ❄️🚗
⏰ Before you set off
• Check the forecast for freezing temperatures, especially overnight and early morning.
• Clear all ice and snow from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof.
• Top up screen wash with anti-freeze fluid.
🚙 While driving
• Slow down – ice drastically reduces traction.
• Increase following distance (at least 8–10 seconds behind the vehicle ahead).
• Accelerate gently to avoid wheel spin.
• Brake early and lightly; use engine braking where possible.
• Steer smoothly – avoid sudden movements.
• Use higher gears when moving off to reduce torque to the wheels.
❄️ Watch out for “black ice”
• Often invisible, especially on:
o Bridges and overpasses
o Shaded roads
o Near rivers and open countryside
• If the road looks wet but temperatures are below freezing, assume it’s icy.
🚨 If conditions are severe
• Avoid travel if possible
• Keep an emergency kit (blanket, torch, phone charger, warm clothing, food)

A number of schools are closed today due to the snow overnight, and the roads remain very hazardous.
Please be careful, and if you don't need to travel, please don't.❄️ 'I’VE NEVER KNOWN A NIGHT LIKE IT…
…And I am not looking forward to the journey home, neither’ ☃️
Whilst we are five hours late ceasing duty, Storm Goretti hasn’t stopped the NN46 Beat Team and Response colleagues from making arrests tonight. We did pass a lot of stranded/stuck vehicles (on the opposing carriageway) on the way to custody in Leicester, however. Junction 22 of the M1 was particularly bad. We only managed to return to Coalville by going via Loughborough. At the time of typing, North West Leicestershire appears to have come off worse than central Leicester and Charnwood. Unless things change rapidly in the next couple of hours, we wouldn’t advise making unnecessary journeys this morning.
Be safe.

An amber weather warning remains in place this evening. Please take extra care. The Met Office has just upgraded its weather warnings for tomorrow and Friday from yellow to amber, meaning there's now an increased chance of heavy snow across our region.
Our advice remains:
In your vehicle: drive carefully, according to conditions, or postpone your journey if it's not essential.
In your home: take care when using portable heaters and open fireplaces/log-burners, and do not leave unattended.
Out and about: steer clear of bodies of water and NEVER venture onto frozen lakes and ponds, even to attempt a rescue - call 999 in an emergency. ... See MoreSee Less

Today, we remember the 47 lives lost in the Kegworth Air Disaster on January 8, 1989. British Midland Flight 92 tragically crashed on the M1 embankment near Kegworth while attempting an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport.
37 years on, we honour not only those who died but also the bravery of the emergency services and local residents who rushed to help at the scene.
Each year a short service is held in their memory at the cemetery on Whatton Road where the memorial for the disaster is situated.
To also mark the anniversary, this year the BBC has released a new documentary which can be watched on BBC iPlayer here: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002pnxv ... See MoreSee Less

Let’s Make Every Journey Safer – A Landmark Road Safety Strategy🚦
Four people lose their lives on our roads every day. That’s simply unacceptable.
Our new Road Safety Strategy, the first in over a decade, sets out bold action to save lives and make our roads safer for everyone.
Here’s some of what’s in the strategy:
✅ Cut deaths and serious injuries by 65% by 2035 (and 70% for children)
✅ Crack down on the “Fatal Four”: speeding, drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, and mobile phone use
✅ Safer vehicles with 18 new mandatory safety technologies
✅ Mandatory eye tests for older drivers
✅ A new Road Safety Investigation Branch to learn lessons from collisions
This comes alongside £24 billion of investment to maintain and improve our roads, making them safer for all road users.
I'm really pleased to see this strategy come forward, it follows some of my work last year to push the Leicestershire County Council for road safety improvements, alongside help from the local community, in Griffydam. You can find out more about this work here: www.facebook.com/reel/1583987142763670
If you have been impacted by a road death or serious injury, Brake, the road safety charity can offer help and support, you can read more here: www.brake.org.uk/
Every journey should start and end safely. This strategy is about saving lives, protecting vulnerable road users, and making our roads safer here in North West Leicestershire.

As a former County Councillor I was involved in Highways and Transport Scrutiny at Leicestershire County Council for 2 years. We had an annual report on the Road Safety Partnership, I always thought this was a fascinating summary about what was happening on Leicestershire Roads.
The latest report is attached below. Accidents involving a casualty or serious injury has plateaued in Leicestershire when you look at the data over a 10 year period. democracy.leics.gov.uk/documents/s188840/Final%20Casualty%20Reduction%202023-24%20Annual%20Report... ... See MoreSee Less

🩺 Need health help fast? Here’s how to get the right NHS care locally
I know many residents are unsure where to turn when they or a loved one needs medical help quickly, but it’s not a life-threatening emergency.
In Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, the NHS has made it easier to get the right care, first time.
If it’s not an emergency:
✅ Try self-care first
Use the NHS App, nhs.uk, or speak to your local pharmacy for advice on minor illnesses.
✅ Contact your GP
If symptoms persist, your GP practice should be your first point of contact during opening hours.
✅ Call NHS 111
If your GP is closed, or you’re not sure what to do, call NHS 111 (or use it online). They can assess your symptoms and book you an appointment in the most appropriate local service.
You may be referred to:
• Your GP practice
• A local pharmacy
• An urgent treatment centre
• A GP service open evenings, weekends or bank holidays
📌 Please avoid going straight to A&E unless it’s life-threatening — this helps reduce waiting times for everyone.
🚨 Always call 999 or go to A&E if it’s a serious emergency.
🧠 Mental health crisis support
Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option — available 24/7.
Getting the right care quickly helps you, and helps protect our NHS for those who need it most. You can read more here: tinyurl.com/4vvcvzb4
Please share this so others know where to turn. ... See MoreSee Less

A really positive meeting yesterday with the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, to talk about the SEND system and share what I’m hearing directly from local schools and families.
For too long, families have had to fight to be listened to, and that’s something we’re committed to changing.
That’s why, alongside my two local SEND roundtables over the past year, we’ve been running the biggest national conversation on SEND in a generation.
There’s still time to get involved 👇
