Pathways to Work Green Paper

Some initial thoughts on the Pathways to Work Green Paper which I will update with further information as the consultation progresses. Currently, many who want to get into work simply cannot because the system does not support them.

This Government is determined to build a fairer system that provides vital support for those who need it most, ensuring they can live with dignity and independence. We will also ensure that everyone who can work is supported to do so. 300,000 people with work-limiting conditions leave their jobs every year because of a lack of support.

I am pleased that the Government is investing an additional £1 billion each year for work, health, and skills support through a “Pathways to Work” programme. This represents one of the largest investments to enhance opportunities for sick and disabled people. This is alongside rebalancing Universal Credit, increasing the standard allowance above inflation for the first time. This will result in a £775 cash increase per year by 2029/30 for both existing and new claimants.

As part of the consultation, we also propose an additional premium for new claimants with the most severe, life-long health conditions who have no prospect of improvement and will never be able to work.

Many find the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) a challenging process, dividing claimants into those who can and can’t work. In reality, health conditions for many people can fluctuate, and with the right reasonable adjustments, many could continue to work. That is why we are scrapping the WCA from 2028/29. In the meantime, we will shift the balance towards face-to-face reassessments whilst looking to switch reassessments off for good for those who will never be able to work. Removing anxiety and worry for those with the most debilitating conditions.

What is clear after speaking to many people with fluctuating conditions is that they fear losing their financial security when they return to work. This Government will introduce a ‘right to try’, by legislating to guarantee that work will never lead to someone being called for a reassessment.

I appreciate that some people might be feeling worried or anxious about their current circumstances. I want to be clear that no changes are taking place immediately and my office will continue to support people struggling to access the welfare system. However, I will continue to seek clarity regarding the changes to PIP eligibility criteria and how these reforms will impact people in North West Leicestershire.

I would encourage anyone to engage with the consultation here and I will continue to scrutinise the process with colleagues as part of my role on the Work and Pensions Select Committee :https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/pathways-to-work-reforming-benefits-and-support-to-get-britain-working-green-paper

In celebration of InImage attachmentImage attachment+1Image attachment

In celebration of International Women’s Day, it was a privilege to bring together a room full of incredible women on Friday.

These are women who both inspire and challenge me every day, who do so much for our area and really are the glue that binds our community together. From educators to local business owners to local community leaders and local representatives. Women who are standing up in our community and getting involved.

We spoke about how language can contribute to little micro aggressions women face daily. How girls at school are “bossy” but boys are “assertive”.

We empowered each other, we listened, we gave advice and we shared our stories.

Although there have been over 17000 MPs elected to Parliament, I’m only the 624th woman - part of what drives me is to inspire the next generation of women in politics.

We must continue to lift each other up, to walk with confidence, and to keep showing up for ourselves ✊

With World Book Day earlier in the week as well, it’s a great opportunity to think about women authors, and to motivate young women interested in writing and reading.

Given that, it of course made sense to host the event at the Book Nook, and actually we could have filled the Book Nook many times over - there are that many inspiring women in our community.

Thank you for hosting us, and for also sharing your story 🍰

Banking Hub Petition

Banking Hub Petition

If you've not had chance to sign my petition to help bring a Banking Hub to Coalville you can sign it online here: tinyurl.com/4zmnspxe or drop me an email, message or ring the office for a paper copy for you, or someone you know!

I am in the process of formalising an appeal to LINK regarding the assessment that has taken place for a Banking Hub in Coalville and will be submitting this shortly. I would urge local residents and other stakeholders, especially current customers of Lloyds, to sign my petition to help show the strength of feeling on this issue.
