National maternity investigation launched to drive improvements

Earlier this week, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care launched a rapid national investigation into NHS maternity and neonatal services.

This will provide truth and accountability for impacted families and drive urgent improvements to care and safety, addressing systemic problems dating back over 15 years.

I’m aware that there is already a corporate manslaughter investigation looking into the failings at maternity units in Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, and I will be monitoring this closely alongside the national investigation.

The pain and suffering caused to bereaved families has been devastating, something no parent deserves and we must work harder now to prevent this happening again.

Failings must and will be held to account, there is no excuse for this level of gross negligence.

You can find more information on the investigation here:

This is an incredibly sensitive topic, and I want to highlight the charity Sands, who support anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss for as long as they need it:

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch with either myself or Cllr Alison Morley about the speeding, anti-social behaviour and just general poor driving along the relief road in Castle Donington.

I am due to meet with the police later in the week to discuss this in more detail, focusing on how we can come to a longer term solution in conjunction with both Leicestershire County Council and North West Leicestershire District Council to reduce the impact on local residents.

You can report car cruising and anti-social behaviour whilst it's taking place to the police on 101 or in an emergency 999, and to North West Leicestershire District Council online via the link in the comments.

Thank you to everyone who’s been in touch with me about the closure of Footpath O89 in Ashby.

I’m part of a working group with local councillors (town and district) and members of the Ashby Footpath Group. We’re meeting later this week to review the latest progress, and I’ll share any updates where possible.

It was nice to meet members of the footpath group a couple of weeks ago and discuss what the closure has meant to them and local people.
