National maternity investigation launched to drive improvements

Earlier this week, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care launched a rapid national investigation into NHS maternity and neonatal services.

This will provide truth and accountability for impacted families and drive urgent improvements to care and safety, addressing systemic problems dating back over 15 years.

I’m aware that there is already a corporate manslaughter investigation looking into the failings at maternity units in Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, and I will be monitoring this closely alongside the national investigation.

The pain and suffering caused to bereaved families has been devastating, something no parent deserves and we must work harder now to prevent this happening again.

Failings must and will be held to account, there is no excuse for this level of gross negligence.

You can find more information on the investigation here:

This is an incredibly sensitive topic, and I want to highlight the charity Sands, who support anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss for as long as they need it:

Campaigners have been calling for a change to the 24-week threshold for years to better support families who experience the heartbreak of baby loss. As a government, we are not only listening to those calls but scrapping the threshold altogether.

Losing a pregnancy at any stage is heartbreaking, extending bereavement leave will allow more families to take the time off work that they need to grieve.

Really enjoyed being at the Ashby Show today, a great showcase of our local farming community.

Good to catch up with the NFU and local farmers about many different topics impacting our rural community.

Nice to catch up with Cllr Damilola Ojuri too who was in attendance as the Mayor of Ashby.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the show such a success!Image attachmentImage attachment+4Image attachment
