Really proud to have spoken in Parliament about the history of some of our towns and how they could benefit from applying to be the new UK Town of Culture!
Culture isn’t just about big cities, it’s about the everyday pride, heritage, creativity and volunteers that make our towns special. From the community spirit of our towns to their markets, history and local events, culture brings people together, boosts local pride and can help attract investment opportunities for everyone.
I'm excited to see towns across the country and locally here in North West Leicestershire put themselves forward and share their stories.
Every place has a story worth telling. 📣🎨📍

With the snow thawing and temperatures dropping here’s some practical advice for driving on icy roads ❄️🚗
⏰ Before you set off
• Check the forecast for freezing temperatures, especially overnight and early morning.
• Clear all ice and snow from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof.
• Top up screen wash with anti-freeze fluid.
🚙 While driving
• Slow down – ice drastically reduces traction.
• Increase following distance (at least 8–10 seconds behind the vehicle ahead).
• Accelerate gently to avoid wheel spin.
• Brake early and lightly; use engine braking where possible.
• Steer smoothly – avoid sudden movements.
• Use higher gears when moving off to reduce torque to the wheels.
❄️ Watch out for “black ice”
• Often invisible, especially on:
o Bridges and overpasses
o Shaded roads
o Near rivers and open countryside
• If the road looks wet but temperatures are below freezing, assume it’s icy.
🚨 If conditions are severe
• Avoid travel if possible
• Keep an emergency kit (blanket, torch, phone charger, warm clothing, food)
