This week, Amanda met with local Rolls Royce apprentice Harry in Parliament to discuss his journey.
More young people will soon have the opportunity to take on an apprenticeship, thanks to the Labour government’s reform of the skills system aimed at unlocking potential and driving growth. The first piece of education legislation, going through Parliament at the moment, will pave the way for Skills England which is a body that will find and fill skills gaps across our country.
In North West Leicestershire, there are just over 1000 apprentices currently on their course, with 100 having recently completed and 300 beginning their apprenticeship between August-October 2024.
After meeting with Harry,
Amanda Hack said:
“Discussing Harry’s journey in his current apprenticeship at Rolls Royce provided valuable insights into what young people are seeking from these programmes now and in the future.
We recognise that there is a genuine skills shortage that we must address. It is crucial to collaborate closely with FE colleges, which provide most of the courses supporting apprenticeship programmes. Locally, we have key sectors such as logistics, and I was pleased to see firsthand during a recent visit to SMB Group’s Stephenson Campus in Coalville, how they are adapting to equip young people with essential skills for this sector.
With more joined-up thinking between the education system, local leaders and employers, we can provide fantastic new opportunities for local people, either just starting out or looking to re-skill, getting people into work with the skills for the future, not just today.”
Dawn Whitemore, Principal and CEO of SMB College Group said:
“The difference that we make to individuals, businesses, local communities and the national economy through the delivery of a wide range of apprenticeships is something that we are very proud of here at SMB College Group. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet with Amanda recently and to showcase our fantastic facilities.
We were also able to show Amanda our amazing vocational lecturers doing what they do best, and give her the opportunity to see our apprentices actively undertaking their training – this is exactly what we need our local MPs to be taking an interest in. I am looking forward to working closer with Amanda to ensure we make a difference to those that we serve.”

As a lifelong Labour supporter and voting for you I am disgusted with your change to voting No on the Assisted Dying Bill. Too many MPs vote using their personal preferences rather than the consensus of their electorate. Thought you might be a different MP than the previous one but guessing I was wrong. …Disappointing.

How taking away winter fuel and then giving it back to some of the ones you took it away from in the first place can be seen as a success....is beyond me

🚛 Great visit to Pall-Ex UK recently, a leading name in logistics right at the heart of our local economy.
We had important conversations about:
✅ Creating high-quality, well-paid jobs
✅ Supporting local apprenticeships to give people new career opportunities
✅ How we can decarbonise the logistics industry
✅ The vital role logistics plays in driving growth across our region
Huge thanks to the team at Pall-Ex for the warm welcome and forward-thinking discussions. It's clear that with the right support, businesses like this can help build a greener, fairer economy for everyone.

Did you quiz them on why they have lorries backing up at 11pm every evening blocking the road and making it dangerous for other road users to pass safely.
A proactive Member of Parliament for NWL
Not a sarcastic comment at all but did you speak to them about taking on disabled people, making necessary adjustments in the workplace and allowing extra, extended sick leave. I know you support the welfare reform as it is (personally I think it needs to happen too but as it is done as a costcutting exercise, totally immoral and it will end up costing lives), it might be a good idea to find out which local businesses are willing to support disabled people back to work.
