British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS) Letter to James Murray MP

As some of you may have seen, following the cabinet reshuffle, James Murray MP has now been made the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. I have met James on several occasions, one of which was when he paid a visit to Snibston Colliery just a few months ago where he met with BCSSS members, and I look forward to having further discussions with him about the BCSSS funds.

Following his appointment, the Labour Group of Coalfield MPs coordinated a letter to the Minister urging him to approve proposals for the future of the BCSSS and to meet with the group ahead of the Autumn Budget. You can find the letter below:

We are keeping the pressure on Leicestershire County Council to reopen Footpath O89 in Ashby as soon as possible. I recently met with local stakeholders to discuss their worries and concerns, and what this route means to the community.

Whilst news of an upgraded path is, of course, welcome, there is no justification for the continued closure whilst details are worked out. It is not acceptable for this footpath to remain closed for another two, three, six months or possibly more, as suggested by the Leader of Leicestershire County Council earlier this week.

The County Council must bring forward a timescale for reopening the footpath or use its powers of enforcement to ensure this public right of way is accessible for the people of Ashby once again.

Last week I met with both the Neighbourhood Commander and Deputy in Castle Donington for a beat walk around the Craner Road area and to discuss a number of different topics, including:

🚗Car Cruising & options / action around enforcement (I am being kept up to date on the RTC at the weekend)
👮‍♀️Local crime rates and trends
📊Broader crime trends across North West Leicestershire
🚓Extra patrols in Ashby & Coalville as part of the summer blitz
🛴Tackling illegal e-scooter usage
🦮An update on the recent dog attack

I meet with the team regularly, providing feedback on the issues that matter to you and discussing how we can make North West Leicestershire safer.

Let me know where we should go on the next beat walk in the comments below.
