Great news for Leicestershire! The Labour Government has announced a £144.8 million funding boost for Leicestershire County Council over the next three years — a 25% increase in core spending power for essential local services.

For too long, Councils like Leicestershire were underfunded. Since 2010, core spending power fell by around a quarter, forcing difficult cuts to services people rely on — from social care and transport to libraries and education.

This Fair Funding settlement is a major step towards reversing years of austerity and rebuilding stronger, fairer communities. It also comes alongside plans for Local Government Reorganisation, which will help unlock efficiencies and further investment in frontline services.

Crucially, this is the first multi-year local government settlement in over a decade, giving councils three years of financial certainty so they can plan ahead.

This also provides a some seperate good news for Leicestershire Fire Service. The Labour Government has announced a £22.8 million funding boost over the next three years — a 28% increase in core spending power.

I’ve been raising this with Ministers over the past year, and was talking about on BBC Politics East Midlands just last week, so it’s encouraging to see progress being made.

Importantly, this is the first multi-year settlement in over a decade, giving the Fire Service three years of certainty to plan ahead.

This funding settlement is an important step towards strengthening our Fire Service. I will continue to engage with Leicestershire Fire Service and Ministers to ensure they receive the resources they need to keep our communities safe.

Good news for our ar

Good news for our area 👇

The new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Leicester Royal Infirmary, alongside the expansion of the UTC at Queen’s Medical Centre, is a very welcome step forward. It will help increase capacity and improve access across our local hospitals.

I’ve visited both hospitals and spoken with East Midlands Ambulance Service. I’ve seen first-hand the immense pressure our A&E departments are under - from overcrowding, to ambulance queues waiting to hand patients over.

This investment will make a real difference, meaning more patients will be seen quickly, receive safer, more timely care and provide greater dignity for those needing urgent treatment as we move to end “corridor care”.

It’s exactly the kind of practical, frontline improvement we need - easing pressure on emergency services while making sure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

This also builds on progress to roll out Neighbourhood Health Services across North West Leicestershire, bringing together GPs, community nurses, social care teams and others to deliver more joined-up care closer to home.

A positive step forward for patients, staff, and our NHS.
