It was a pleasure to Chair the first meeting of the Cardiac Risk in the Young APPG since its reformulation earlier this week.

We heard from Professor Michael Papdakis about the groundbreaking and largest-ever study of cardiac screening in young people just published in the prestigious Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC).

With over 100,000 young people (14-35) the headline findings are:

🏥1 in 300 young people screened were found to have a potentially life-threatening heart condition
🩺41% of those diagnosed went on to receive significant interventions — including pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac surgery and, in 2 cases, heart transplantation
📈The simple ECG test showed a sensitivity of 77%, with a very low false positive rate of just 2.1%
👩🏽‍🤝‍👨🏼Crucially, the study found no significant difference in risk between athletes and non-athletes — reinforcing CRY’s long-held view that screening should be available to all young people

We also heard the emotional testimony from 19-year-old Finn Mason, who was screened by CRY and found to have a heart condition. Following successful, corrective surgery, Finn is now studying medicine at Imperial College London and is an aspiring future Cardiologist!

Finn, and indeed many others, are living proof of the importance of screening in young people – and how this shouldn’t be ignored.

It was a positive, informative and emotional first meeting of the group, and I’m deeply saddened to have to step down as Chair – but I will remain incredibly involved in this campaign and the APPG.
