Today, we remember the 47 lives lost in the Kegworth Air Disaster on January 8, 1989. British Midland Flight 92 tragically crashed on the M1 embankment near Kegworth while attempting an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport.
Â
37 years on, we honour not only those who died but also the bravery of the emergency services and local residents who rushed to help at the scene.
Â
Each year a short service is held in their memory at the cemetery on Whatton Road where the memorial for the disaster is situated.
To also mark the anniversary, this year the BBC has released a new documentary which can be watched on BBC iPlayer here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002pnxv
