Following continued action over the past 12 months on the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme, over 750 former mineworkers in North West Leicestershire will now see their pensions rise by 40%, thanks to the Labour Government’s transfer of the £2.3bn investment reserve back to scheme members.

That’s an average of £100 per week back into the pockets of those who once powered our nation.

I am so pleased that we have secured this outcome during the budget. This change will make a real difference to the lives of local people and their families. A big thank you must go to the campaigners, constituents and coalfield colleagues who have been engaged in the lobbying efforts to right this injustice.

From Coalville to Measham, Moira, and beyond, our industrial heritage has shaped the local landscape. For generations, our former miners powered this country, and it’s only right that we recognise their sacrifices.

We’re not just providing financial support; we’re also improving healthcare for respiratory illnesses through our Men’s Health Strategy. It recognises the additional care often needed in our former industrial communities, where health inequalities are higher.

I’m proud of our local industrial heritage. It touches nearly every part of North West Leicestershire, and I’m proud that our Labour Government is delivering the support our former mineworkers deserve

Good news for our ar

Good news for our area 👇

The new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Leicester Royal Infirmary, alongside the expansion of the UTC at Queen’s Medical Centre, is a very welcome step forward. It will help increase capacity and improve access across our local hospitals.

I’ve visited both hospitals and spoken with East Midlands Ambulance Service. I’ve seen first-hand the immense pressure our A&E departments are under - from overcrowding, to ambulance queues waiting to hand patients over.

This investment will make a real difference, meaning more patients will be seen quickly, receive safer, more timely care and provide greater dignity for those needing urgent treatment as we move to end “corridor care”.

It’s exactly the kind of practical, frontline improvement we need - easing pressure on emergency services while making sure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

This also builds on progress to roll out Neighbourhood Health Services across North West Leicestershire, bringing together GPs, community nurses, social care teams and others to deliver more joined-up care closer to home.

A positive step forward for patients, staff, and our NHS.
