I’ve been increasingly concerned about the rising costs learner drivers face when trying to book a driving test. That’s why I’ve been leading calls for urgent action to tackle driving test “swapping”, a practice that has surged in recent years, and to make sure only genuine learners can book and manage their test slots.

That’s why last month, I wrote a letter to the Minister for Local Transport alongside 38 of my colleagues, urging the Government to take action to bring prices back down to normal levels.

Earlier today, the Secretary of State for Transport announced new measures to curb this exploitation, including limits on test swaps and ensuring only learner drivers will be able to book tests.
As well as changing who can book tests, examiners from the Ministry of Defence will be brought into the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to help reduce the backlog, and additional incentives will be offered to current examiners to encourage them to remain in their roles.

These new steps will help bring test prices back under control and ensure that driving tests remain accessible, fair, and affordable for everyone working towards their licence.

Good news for our ar

Good news for our area 👇

The new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Leicester Royal Infirmary, alongside the expansion of the UTC at Queen’s Medical Centre, is a very welcome step forward. It will help increase capacity and improve access across our local hospitals.

I’ve visited both hospitals and spoken with East Midlands Ambulance Service. I’ve seen first-hand the immense pressure our A&E departments are under - from overcrowding, to ambulance queues waiting to hand patients over.

This investment will make a real difference, meaning more patients will be seen quickly, receive safer, more timely care and provide greater dignity for those needing urgent treatment as we move to end “corridor care”.

It’s exactly the kind of practical, frontline improvement we need - easing pressure on emergency services while making sure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

This also builds on progress to roll out Neighbourhood Health Services across North West Leicestershire, bringing together GPs, community nurses, social care teams and others to deliver more joined-up care closer to home.

A positive step forward for patients, staff, and our NHS.
