Protecting Britain’s economic stability
North West Leicestershire MP votes with government following assurances of additional support for pensioners facing hardship.
North West Leicestershire MP, Amanda Hack, today supported the government and voted against an opposition motion calling for the decision to target Winter Fuel Payments targeted at poorer pensioners to be reversed. The motion was defeated by 348 votes to 228. She has written to constituents outlining her decision:
“The new government will always be honest with you about the nation’s finances and the tough choices that we must take to protect Britain’s economic stability. The Chancellor has been forced to take difficult steps to fill the hole inherited from the previous Conservative government – with overspending, amounting to £22bn this year alone. This includes the decision to target Winter Fuel Payments to the poorest pensioners.
Along with most of my Labour colleagues, I supported the government in today’s vote against an opposition motion calling for the move to be overturned. Nonetheless I want to reassure you that I made my decision after careful thought and productive discussions with colleagues who, like me, want to see fewer pensioners in poverty.
That’s why the government is committed to protecting the ‘triple lock’ on pensions over the lifetime of this parliament. This guarantee saw the state pension rise by over £900 this year. The state pension is projected to increase by over £1,000 in the next five years for around 12 million pensioners.
We have also announced a 6-month extension to the Household Support Fund, providing a £421m boost to local authorities. This will give extra cash to local authorities to support those facing hardship with living costs. It can help vulnerable residents with energy and water bills, food and other essential items. We are also prioritising long-term support for pensioners through our Warm Homes Plan, which will support investment in low-carbon heating and upgrade millions of homes over this parliament, helping reduce fuel poverty levels.
I want to be clear that Winter Fuel Payments will continue for anyone receiving Pension Credit. This guarantees a minimum income level for pensioners and automatically unlocks other benefits, including a free TV licence, the Warm Home discount and support for housing costs.
Thousands of eligible households are not claiming Pension Credit. I am determined to ensure that all those eligible for Pension Credit get it. I have already written to the leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, Cllr Richard Blunt, to request his help identifying eligible households that have yet to claim. I am pleased that council officers are already engaging with the Department for Work and Pensions. I look forward to working with councillors from all parties to ensure those eligible receive payments alongside any other unclaimed support.
450 additional staff have been redeployed to the Department of Work and Pensions to support the anticipated surge in claims, which must be submitted by 16 December 2024. Successful claims will be backdated by three months.
Dedicated constituency surgeries will commence in October to support these efforts. Anyone in North West Leicestershire worried about their circumstances is invited to make an appointment by emailing [email protected] . In the meantime, I encourage you, your friends, family and neighbours to check if you or they are eligible for additional support by visiting www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility or calling the Pension Credit claim line at 0800 99 1234.”

In Westminster Hall, I recently spoke about how living in a rural community can make accessing healthcare far more difficult than it should be.
One of the first casework issues I ever dealt with was from a resident in Ashby who needed an out of hours appointment on a Sunday. The only place they could be seen was in Leicester and just getting there cost around £40 in a taxi.
I also raised the pressure on our community pharmacies. They are the first port of call for so many of us, especially in areas like ours with a history of industrial work and higher rates of respiratory conditions. Around 8% of local residents are living with asthma, and many rely on regular medication and advice from their local chemist.
But depending on where you live, getting to a pharmacy isn’t always simple.
Castle Donington, which has the highest asthma levels in the constituency, has just one pharmacy serving the entire area. It does fantastic work, but the next closest option is more than five miles away.
(I am aware of the recent announcement regarding the Independent Prescribing Pathfinder service and have written to the ICB about this.)
Our rural communities deserve better access to the healthcare services and I’m proud that we are part of the rollout of neighbourhood health services, bringing more of the NHS closer to local people.
But I want to hear your views on health services across the constituency. I’ve just launched a local survey which you can complete here: www.amandahack.com/campaigns/local-nhs-survey/

Over the past week, I’ve heard from many of you about the rise in heating oil prices across the constituency following the volatility in the Middle East.
Some residents have told me about orders being cancelled and then reissued at significantly higher prices. I know that for households that rely on heating oil, delaying an order simply isn’t an option. Poor practices and hiking up prices is completely unacceptable.
As a member of the Labour Rural Research Group, I met with the Energy Minister and the Treasury Secretary alongside colleagues last week to raise these concerns, and we have continued to provide feedback from our survey. Following those discussions, the government is now taking action.
We are not only looking at how the UK heating oil sector can be more closely regulated in the future, but we are also announcing a £53 million support package for those most in need. The funding will be distributed by local authorities via the Crisis and Resilience Fund (previously known as the Household Support Fund). As further information on the scheme becomes available, I will of course share that with you.
If you haven’t yet had the chance to complete our survey on this issue, we are still sharing information with treasury colleagues, so please complete it here before the end of today: tinyurl.com/2fd63cyy
